As soon as they left the store, Kayleb began to think about his life choices. Was that really the right thing? Maybe Luke needed more help than he could offer. While he spent his time in his head, he still listened to the footsteps of his immediate pack members and their breathing patterns so he could walk in front of them and still be sure they were right behind him. So he didn't have to slow down. Still, they had to leave this area as quickly as possible - before Kayleb exploded.
Unfortunately, Luke wasn't just lacking in clothes, and since James had already taken it upon himself to accept his money, he decided that none of his boys should walk around in completely worn-out shoes, which was their next stop.
But knowing that Kayleb was already at the limit, both boys did everything they could to finish as fast as possible.
Less than half an hour later, they left the second store.
"We have one last stop before we head back home."
To both boys' surprise, they found themselves in a grocery store.
"Get anything you like, and when we get home, I need to know what you might be allergic to," his voice was monotone, trying to keep his blood cool, "Before any of you say that werewolves can't be allergic to anything, I have to tell you that this is entirely false. It's a common myth, but werewolves can have deadly allergies. After all, you are not lycans."
Suddenly, he whirled around: "I'm taking the bags to the car. I'll be back in about ten minutes. You have until then to get your things."
Luke and James stood speechless for a long moment, unsure if they had heard him correctly. But two minutes passed before it literally finally clicked in their heads at the same time. Kayleb hasn't lied to them, so why would he start then? So they ran as fast as their legs could carry them.
Just as he had told them, Kayleb was waiting at the checkout precisely ten minutes later. He waited for his subordinates, becoming more impatient as time went on.
The cashier could feel the unease radiating from him but didn't make a single sound. As a werewolf, he can sense an angry Alpha when standing right next to him. It wasn't at all because he nearly pissed himself after the Alpha glared at him a few minutes after he stopped near his checkout.
Kayleb's eyes were on the young wolf. There was something strange about him. He knows the feeling his scent gives him. A disgust that he still remembers from his childhood. But it felt odd.
Another ten minutes later, Luke and James quickly jogged to the counter, where they saw Kayleb standing, intently staring at the poor cashier. He impatiently taps his foot on the floor like a father fed up with his sons. He even had his arms crossed over his chest.
"Are we late?" Luke asked innocently as if he didn't know the answer to his question already.
The lycan just shook his head in disappointment before finally stepping up to the cash register with both boys behind him, his eyes still on the cashier. Like Kayleb, the other two were on the edge: Luke because he was ashamed and James because he didn't know what had happened. Neither of them had spoken to each other since early morning.
Despite everything, Kayleb sighed heavily, pushed his subordinate Alpha wolf aside, and nodded wordlessly to the cashier.
Back in their car, Luke sat in the passenger seat next to Kayleb while James sat behind them in the middle, where the lycan could see him clearly.
The ride was quiet for the first minute until James opened his big mouth: "Which of you is ready to tell me what happened in the changing room?"
He could immediately see the Beta's body in the front seat stiffen until it could be mistaken for a plank. But he also saw the stern look Kayleb gave him through the front mirror, seemingly as a warning.
