At the end of the day, after many torturous school hours, during which Neil and Clara were briefed on everything that had happened, they found the Omega boy trying to leave the school alone. However, they quickly caught up with him and stayed by his side, glad he finally would get the help he deserved. Above all, they were pleased that Kayleb was committed to the local wolf issue. As an outsider, Clara couldn't do anything. Neil feared the consequences since he was close to James, and his Alpha already had enough problems.
Kayleb was pleased that his friends were checking on the boy but not speaking to him - as he had told them. The only thing even better was seeing the boy standing by his car at the end of the day, even though he was shaking. He stood close enough to it for everyone to know he was waiting there, but not too close that he could accidentally scratch it.
"Get in," he said to the younger boy as he walked to the driver's side.
The boy was frozen and didn't know what to do, but when the driver's door opened, he flinched slightly, not having heard Kayleb open the car. But the truth about why he didn't open the passenger door was that he just didn't want to try and open the door like an idiot only to find it locked. He still believed that whatever Kayleb was up to had to be a far-fetched joke. After all, he seems like his Alpha's son: big mouth and nothing behind it.
But when the small boy looked at the older again, he couldn't see any of the viciousness he'd always seen in all the Alphas he'd met. So he decided to give his trust one last time. Carefully, he opened the passenger door and slowly got in. Tremendous tension had built up in his body over the past few hours. Not long after he was seated in the car, a strange feeling of security suddenly came over him. The closeness of the older boy made him feel protected. At least he hoped he was secure with him.
The sound of the car starting pulled him out of his thoughts. He didn't know why, but the vibrations and sounds brought something deep inside of him back to life.
"Well, you have to tell me where to go," Kayleb said nonchalantly, chuckling awkwardly.
The prompt startled the Omega a little. He didn't know why he was in the car. So, how was he supposed to know where to go?
There was a brief pause between the two. Getting no answer, the lycan just drove off. He knew roughly where the North Pack's main house was supposed to be. With the window slightly open, he should get there without the Omega saying a single word. He still remembers the stench of the jocks who almost killed the little boy.
"What's your name? I don't want to keep calling you 'Omega', you know."
Another question that surprised the cowering Omega. Usually, prominent people like the older boy don't want to be associated with lower-than-ordinary people like him who are at the bottom of the hierarchy. Even though his stare wasn't as terrifying as the one he usually gets, he felt compelled to answer him.
"My name is Luke," he barely got out, stuttering heavily. But when he saw the cautious smile on the older boy's face, he somehow found the strength to say his name proudly again.
"Luke, what a beautiful name. Back home, I have a good friend with the same name. I think you two would like each other."
The Omega wasn't sure why he was telling him this, but he was grateful there wasn't an awkward pause.
"And how old are you?"
It was unexpected, but the taller one seemed genuinely interested in getting to know him.
"I'm sixteen but turn seventeen in a few weeks," he answered truthfully.
Kayleb had a warm feeling inside. Luke was so small and barely younger than him. It broke his heart to know that his pack didn't treat him as he deserved.
"Do you have anyone who would hold you back in your current pack?"
Unlike the others, this question snapped Luke out of his happy mood. Kayleb wasn't looking directly at him, but he could feel his eyes resting on him. Immediately, Luke fumbled with his hands, and his right leg began to move erratically.
The lycan saw immediately that Luke was uncomfortable with his question. Something seemed to bother him about it. He was about to tell him he didn't have to answer, but a barely perceptible sound came out of the Omega's mouth, a word he would never forget, just before tears welled up in the small boy's eyes.
It took Kayleb a moment to internalize the one-word response he received. But he believed him immediately because of his reaction.
"How would you like to change your pack? I'll be here for a while, and when I go home, you could accompany me to the rest of my pack. If you leave your current pack, I could make you a solid first member of mine and later integrate you into my home pack when I take it over when I turn eighteen."
Luke stared at him wide-eyed, almost if he had just grown two heads. It looked weird, with the big tears trying to find their way down his cheeks.
At that moment, Luke finally realized that this must have been a sick joke from his Alphas son. Nobody was as cruel as he was. He always ignored him and never helped in the way someone in his position should, which he only knew because he helped everyone else, even other Omegas.
"Stop the car and let me out!"
It was now up to Kayleb to give the other boy a strange look. He didn't do what Luke ordered him to do. Instead, he drove on. Nothing Luke said after that was important enough for him to stop his car or even really listen. Even the tantrum the Omega threw didn't get him anywhere.
As the scent of the pack Luke was carrying grew stronger, he knew he was near their home.
"You told me nothing would keep you here. Everyone seems to mistreat you and beat you almost to death regularly. Now that someone wants to give you a chance at a better life, you are destroying his property?" Kayleb's voice was calm as he spoke.
Luke immediately felt terrible when the boy, who was just a little older than him, lectured him. He fell back in the seat and hung his head.
"Maybe I should ask you that differently. Or even talked to you about it before, but I can't see you getting beaten up every single fucking day. That doesn't happen in lycan packs. One of the things I hate about werewolves is their barbaric mindset," Kayleb mumbled the last part angrily.
As the car stopped, he turned to Luke, looking straight into his darkened eyes, filled with heavy sadness.
"Do you want to leave the pack you are in now and join mine? I need an answer now before we speak to your current Alpha."
Luke surprisingly felt the excitement rising within him. But at the same time, fear shot through his veins like adrenaline, holding him into place. He couldn't move a single muscle even though he wanted to.
Kayleb waited patiently for a few minutes. He would have delayed that decision even longer to give Luke enough time to think it over carefully. After all, this is no small matter, and word could quickly get around in werewolf circles as they don't like disloyal wolves. However, a sudden knock on his car window reminded him they were already there, and he really needed an answer as the North Pack had already seen them.
"Blink once for yes and twice for no," he said quickly to the stiff Omega. Before Luke could even think, he blinked once. The lycan waited a moment longer, but when nothing else came, he smiled brightly.
Kayleb clapped his hands happily, saying, "Then let's go and give them the good news." Even as he spoke, his hand was already on the car door. He abruptly opened it, pushing the man on the other side out of the way. The slightly older wolf narrowly escaped, being thrown to the ground.
