As promised, Kayleb drove Chad straight to his house, which was located near the main North Pack packhouse. He debated whether or not to step out of his car after parking in front of the mentioned packhouse.

But that decision was made for him when he saw the pack's Luna come out of the house and walk straight towards him.

Before she could arrive, however, he was already standing in front of his car, leaning against the now-closed door. The woman did not look happy or healthy. Almost as bad as her son.

"Kayleb, right?" she asked, uncertainty in her voice.

She no longer seemed to be the strong woman he had met not long ago. He nodded cautiously and crossed his arms over his chest. A deep, brief silence fell over them.

"I spoke to my son about what happened between you two." Just as she finished speaking, there was another pause before her sad face twisted into disappointment. "I am appalled by his actions. He wasn't always like that."

"I'm almost certain it's his father's fault," her voice was laced with disdain.

Kayleb wondered why that might be. After all, she and Dal's father were soulmates.

But he couldn't ask questions as Dal's mother continued talking. "I tried everything to break his father's influence over him, but I failed miserably."

Her entire demeanor was that of a broken woman who was broken long ago but has now found the will to live again. "Maybe you can free him. He is confused and scared, and his father doesn't make things any easier with the insults he hurls at him. Not to mention the violence he inflicts on him and-"

"What?" Kayleb asked, interrupting the woman's tirade. His voice silenced everything around him, even the wildlife, while his eyes glowed menacingly in her direction with their dark, blood-red Alpha eyes.

The Luna was frozen, fear gripping her like never before.

But his sudden expression of affection for his soulmate was short-lived, for the mask of neutrality soon returned to his face.

Even though her words sounded sincere, Kayleb still got angry with her.

"You are a Luna. A title usually reserved for high-ranking people, the partners of lycan rulers." He rolled his eyes slightly, annoyed that this was happening and affecting his people's traditions. "No one else should have the authority to call themselves that! And yet, for some reason, you have that title. It gives you unimaginable power."

He could see the confusion in her eyes when he mentioned certain powers. However, he refused to elaborate. "But you don't use them! Not even when someone more powerful comes along who might be able to help you out. Not even pressure could make you do the right thing."

Kayleb's anger was dangerously visible. The woman, on the other hand, backed away from the younger Alpha. Not just out of fear but also because of the pain his words of truth caused. She felt ashamed.

"You had time to get to Dal, reach his soul, and help him to wander out of the darkness. I don't think you're a bad person, but I'm also not someone who wants to get involved as long as nothing bad happens," he said the last part with venom in his voice. "Just like people I know all too well."

Anger rose within him. Strangely, his lycan side was closer to the surface than usual, trying to calm him down. Almost as if, deep down, he wanted to be calm, which confused him immensely. Because before, it was always the lycan in him that raged.

However, before anything disastrous could happen, Chad emerged from his home, worriedly locking eyes with Kayleb upon seeing his Luna standing before him.
