For a long time, the entire hallway was dead quiet. Everyone had already left, so it wasn't that strange. But Kayleb couldn't hear Dal or himself breathing. Just processing what had just happened took a while.

Kayleb didn't respond to the action of his soulmate, his mind blank and completely shocked. He just stood there frozen. He didn't know if that had just happened or if his brain was messing with him. But the moment he felt Dal wrap his muscular arms around him, he knew it really happened.

On the one hand, he loved it. It was uplifting to feel his partner so intensely. Then again, Kayleb should have been the first to do it. Dal didn't seem to mind that Kayleb didn't reciprocate the hug.

Not until he could feel the stare the Alpha lycan was giving him. He instantly realized what had just happened.

"By the moon," he whispered anxiously, "just forget that just happened."

Dal tried to get away from his mate as quickly as he could, embarrassed by his sudden action, but Kayleb grabbed his arm before he could take a single step. The Lycan did not know what was happening, but before either of them knew it, his lips were on the gracious of his companions. They were soft but also a little rough, just like Dal's. The taste was the most intoxicating thing he had ever experienced. It was something between stardust honey and blackwood resin. Sweet, with a strong note of something otherworldly. His mother always told him about the otherworldly taste of kissing your soulmate for the first time. She was right. After just one try, he was hooked.

As they stood in the hallway and kissed, time seemed to stand still. Not even a light breeze passed past them as if the whole world had been waiting for this moment.

Far too soon, Kayleb broke the kiss again. Dazed, he looked directly into his soulmate's eyes, which seemed just as absent as his after that magical kiss. His eyes widened, and his body rocked like a ship on a wild sea. Just as Kayleb was about to say something, Dal grabbed the back of his head and pulled him into him, only to press their lips together again. This time, the world seemed to spin faster, just like the passion in their kiss increased.

Minutes, hours, or maybe days, neither of these lovers knew how much time had passed in each other's embrace. Until they finally had to take a breath.

Dal gave Kayleb an arrogant grin while the lycan's face was bright red, his cheeks, in particular, flaring up. But Dal wasn't doing much better: his light topaz skin didn't let the red show through like Kayleb's fair skin.

Which seemed to give the slightly taller werewolf an advantage over him, but they both knew who was in charge. Kayleb knew it. But at some point, he was sure, Dal would try to get ahead of him, but he would fail miserably. For now, he accepted his soulmate for who he was: a little shit.

"I take that as a, 'Will you be my boyfriend?'" Dal asked after a moment of uncertainty.

Kayleb couldn't help but laugh at his mate's antics. They just kissed like the world would end the next day, and he had to ask such a question. It was way funnier than it should have been to him.

He had his eyes closed while he laughed like an idiot. That's why he couldn't see the disappointment in his soulmate's eyes.

"Of course!" he finally said before opening his eyes again.

But Dal was already conflicted, as Kayleb did one thing but said something completely different. How could he not be confused about this?

So, a moment later, he breathlessly clarified, "So we're a couple now?"

The sheer desperation in Dal's voice surprised Kayleb. So he finally opened his eyes fully again. He saw a sight that almost broke his heart. The sweet Dal he came to love after he returned to himself was gone. A panicked and confused version of himself stood before him. His hands fumbled with each other, and his eyes looked slightly downward. All his pride had vanished like the wind, as had his previously demonstrated courage.

Kayleb slowly cupped his face in his hands, leaving Dal no choice but to look into his eyes.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have laughed. But after that magical kiss, it sounded so stupid," he began to clarify himself, "And yes, I would love to be your boyfriend."

"Really?" Dal asked again, his eyes shimmering like jewels.

"Yes." Kayleb nodded in response.

Instantly, the werewolf's mood changed. His sad expression turned into a beaming smile. A second later, Kayleb lost his footing. Dal hugged him tighter, lifting him effortlessly as if he weighed nothing.

"Finally!" Dal exclaimed excitedly just as the bell rang.

His heart beat faster than before, afraid that someone would discover them this relaxed. Until their spoken words finally sunk in, where he realized, to his delight, that they were now a couple. So he didn't have to worry about it anymore. He imitated the other boy's playful attitude and laughed with him, but not for long, as he lowered his head to capture his companion's lips again. His hands cupped Kayleb's face.

Finally, someone called Dal's name. It was Chad, standing far away from them with a happy grin on his handsome face. He had just seemed so smug. As if he wanted to tell them that he had told them this would happen.

And yes, he did. But that didn't mean the two almost-men wanted to see that look on their mutual friend's face.

Just as quickly as this happened, Kayleb broke up the intimate moment. He took a step back, his eyes glued to the floor. Which suddenly seemed like the most interesting place in the world.

"I'll tell Ian to talk to you," Dal told him before kissing Kayleb goodbye.

A grin crossed his face as the lycan's face turned red again, not out of embarrassment but because it felt natural for Dal to take the initiative.

He had to ensure Dal knew who wore the pants in their relationship. Before Dal could get far away from him, he grabbed his arm and pulled him back in. This time, he kissed him hard - but only for a second. He then let go of Dal and walked towards Chad.

There was a shit-eating grin on his face. Meanwhile, Chad was using all his strength not to laugh at the confused look his best friend sent after Kayleb.

Before Dal could get any ideas, Chad finally decided to intervene by putting his arm around him to force him to practice. Even though he knew Dal would get chewed out by their coach since he hadn't attended any of his classes. But as always, he would most likely get away without any problems. As the son of their city's leader, he rarely got into real trouble.

That was until Kayleb came around. Everything was different with him. He didn't care about any of Dal's status. The first time, his best friend actually suffered consequences that almost destroyed him. But Chad still couldn't fully believe Dal was reformed. He was afraid he would do something that would upset Kayleb again. If he was honest with himself, he was only waiting for this. And in the end, he wasn't sure if he would still be by his best friend's side.

But for now, as long as everything was good, he would stay by his side. As long Dal was himself and not this disgusting piece of shit that he was under his father's thumb. Just one more thing he had to thank Kayleb for because he was the one who freed Dal. Without Dal, he would have left his pack years ago.
