The once lively living room of the North Pack packhouse was marred by a heavy silence, only interrupted by the occasional growling.

Only one wolf there was not part of the pack, the same one whose nostrils flared because of his heavy breathing and who was annoyed that someone dared try to gauge information about his brother. He hated being spied on.

But the reason for his visible anger did not dare to come out of hiding with his head held high.

With fury unseen before, Ian stood up, fed up with the situation that nobody tried to figure out. Half of his right arm was already transformed. He was quick on his feet, and even quicker, he grabbed the person behind the furniture around their neck. As if the woman weighed nothing, Ian held her up with claws digging into her flesh.

The entire room gasped in shock, not only at Ian's show of strength but also - or especially - at the woman on the other end of his rage.

He was ready to break her neck, slit her throat, or anything else. His family's secrets are theirs, not anyone else's. Dishonorable people who try to get to them by sneaking around deserve to die.

Before anyone could react, there was already an audible crack and a quiet female whimper.

"Stop!" shouted the North Pack's Luna.

However, Ian was in no mood to listen. His claws dug deeper into the soft flesh beneath, eliciting another whimper from the woman as her blood dripped down his hand.

Ready to kill this woman to ensure nothing comes out of this room, his face twisted into a look of bloodlust.

When the others saw the change, they knew they had to do something. Without thinking, Chad jumped up and threw Ian to the ground.

Ian was confused as a hard body threw him to the ground. He was so shocked that he let go of the filthy woman's neck. It pumped another wave of anger through his body.

When he realized this, he became even angrier. He wanted to hunt her down, tear her to pieces, and step on her heart. But despite his superior strength, Chad somehow held him grounded.

Out of the corner of his eye, he could only see the Luna walking up to the woman, talking to her, helping her cover her wounds, and leading her out of the room.

"My husband put you up to this, didn't he?"

Ian heard the Luna say to the woman. Those words made him so furious that he didn't hear the answer as he thrashed in Chad's tight embrace.

Soon, Dal's mother returned. While she was gone, Chad somehow managed to calm Ian down enough to release him, sure he wouldn't try to hurt anyone anymore.

"I'll make sure no one else listens to your conversation," she promised suddenly, without really going into detail. "It seems I need to have a few words with my husband. So please excuse me."

Just for a second, she looked at her son. Both had unreadable expressions, almost as if they were having a quiet conversation.

This was when Ian understood why his brother hated this pack and was this suspicious of them. It finally made it clear to him why he wanted him to spy on her.

Because as far as Ian knew, spying on one's own pack is not only perceived as morally disturbing but also as mistrust, which can lead to packs breaking up very quickly. Unless it's kept a secret.

"Do you need tea to calm down or-"

"Just get it over with. I probably won't come by for a few days or weeks."

Chad looked shocked. He had gotten pretty used to Ian being around them. But he could also understand him. Some things might seem strange to him. Other packs that visit them also usually point them out. But no one really cared since they were used to it, including Chad.
