It didn't take long for their football team to come out. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until Dal saw Kayleb. His eyes widened, his heart began to race, and the casual way he walked suddenly became stiff. They instantly locked into each other's eyes. Kayleb could hear his soulmate's heart beating like crazy. It made his skip a few beats.
His body wanted Dal by his side, and he hated himself for seemingly needing this useless guy. Especially after what he saw in the locker rooms. Still, his heart belonged to Dal. He couldn't do anything about it, even if it didn't work out, at least not until the next full moon.
The real question was whether he wanted to do this. There was no guarantee that he would find someone else or if he even wanted to. Dal was his type through and through.
Even though they both heard the other's hearts, Dal didn't go to Kayleb. Maybe out of fear, or was it shame?
Instead, Chad came running towards him. "You're here!" he called, his voice full of childlike happiness.
"Of course, but I could use someone to explain the rules of this game to me. I have no fucking idea how to play it."
Kayleb tried to calm the situation down a bit. All the while, he tried to hide his lie, knowing the rules as any other player, having played it himself with his twin for over ten years. He wasn't on the school team, but he trained with them. Both started out on a children's team. Of course, they were pretty gentle with each other back then, but it helped.
However, after middle school, he dropped out and pursued swimming instead but continued to train with his friends.
Chad glanced at him, not quite believing the other's words. He tried to get Dal to help Kayleb, but his best friend ignored him.
Dal's eyes only glanced at his soulmate every now and then, not daring to look at him for long periods.
However, Kayleb knew that the other boy was listening in on their conversation - since he also looked at him occasionally - not only because of the dark look he sent his best friend but also because he almost broke his helmet in his hand.
But still, he didn't come to him, which made Kayleb a little sad. Despite his obvious jealousy, Dal didn't even try to draw his attention to him.
The boys around the lycan could sense his change in mood despite the smile on his face. It was painfully obvious.
Only Dal was unaware of this, his mind filled with fear that his best friend was on his way to insinuate his way into his soulmate's heart.
It didn't take long for the coach to blow his whistle, drawing the full attention of the team and the few sitting in the stands.
Most of the football team consisted of wolves that were part of Dal's pack. Here and there, a few from other wolf packs could also be seen. Additionally, three of James' pack. They all looked worriedly at their Alpha and Zaphal.
Out of nowhere, Kayleb developed a sense of pride and belonging. Grown from the way the pack seemed to care about him, even without having bowed to him. Unfortunately, it wasn't as easy as they might think. He knew that from his training. Not everyone had to submit to him, but all had to accept him in his position.
Despite it all, Kayleb already knew he would be a different Alpha than his father. It didn't matter how much he loved his cold and distant father. He was an abysmal Alpha.
The moment the game started. Kayleb could hear incoming heartbeats. He wasn't afraid or worried about them. After all, he had heard those heartbeats earlier in the day.
One by one, his friends and apparent group leaders of the pack of which he was now the boss sat down around him. Tarik and Neil sat before him, while Clara and Jerome sat behind him. The last one was nervous, as always around the lycan.
