On a warm, sunny day, the wind made a gentle rhythm rustle through the treetops. Kayleb had searched everywhere for the guy he was looking for. The one whose name Chad was thankfully able to give him. It was a stroke of luck when, after weeks, he finally received the information that the guy had been seen under the tree Chad had mentioned.
As soon as he heard this, he left his locker, where one of James' direct subordinates told him what he had seen. Fearing the guy would disappear back into thin air, where he seemed to have been for the last few weeks.
He swung open the doors to the football field, where a few players were already warming up, except for Chad, who was still sitting in the cafeteria with their friends.
Some gave him odd looks, and others tilted their heads slightly in recognition of their vastly different statuses, even though Kayleb still hadn't "claimed" James's pack as his subordinates.
He acknowledged them briefly before quickly moving to the side and turning a corner where the tree that was now his target stood.
Almost silently, only now and then, a leaf crunched under his feet, or a branch was split in two. Nothing seemed to break the concentration of the boy who sat under the tree, warmed by the shining autumn sun, some of the light even breaking through the tree's irregular pattern of leaves.
Before he knew it, Kayleb was already standing behind the boy, feeling a particular sensation just being near him. Looking over the boy's shoulders, Kayleb could read a few pages of the book resting in his small hands.
Kayleb didn't comment on the contents of that book, although he couldn't hide the disappointment on his face. Instead, he walked behind him to the other side. Careful not to disturb the absorbed boy, he sat quietly beside him.
With one of his legs bent close to his body and the other outstretched, he waited, not for the right moment, but until the boy would finally notice him. After all, it was impossible not to see him.
But to his surprise and slight irritation, the boy didn't notice him. Not even a little. Not when he moved or even cleared his throat.
Angry at being ignored, he did something he hated himself for. "Nolan will succeed in pushing back the ogre forces, but at the end of the book, he will be banished as his King fears his popularity and is ultimately killed by his lover Vamelia."
It was quiet for a moment. Eerily quiet, as if the whole world had suddenly disappeared. The boy didn't move, and even a minute later, he didn't open the next page.
"Why?"
"You ignored me!"
The other boy clicked his tongue, his face contorted with anger. "I've heard and seen you for a while. But that doesn't mean you deserve my attention."
"Rude," Kayleb commented, "Still, I'm here for a reason."
"I'm sure, big guy, but I'm not interested in listening to your nonsense."
Just as the boy tried to get up, his right hand was already on the grassy ground.
Kayleb gave him a predatory grin. He licked his lips and waited for the boy to get up to pounce. But he must have seen it when he suddenly stopped.
"If you leave now, I can't promise your safety, little hunter."
Out of the corner of his eye, Kayleb could see with joy that the other boy was frozen. Quickly, as if nothing had happened, he sat back down, his book closed in his lap, his body shaking with fear.
"The wolves living here may be oblivious to many things, including your organization, but I'm not some foolish pup."
Without batting an eyelid, the now even more frightened boy averted his gaze completely from Kayleb.
