Kayleb looked at the two of them expectantly after this revelation. He didn't expect a reaction. He only waited for more questions, but they said nothing. It became a bit too quiet for his taste. Making him somewhat nervous, almost like they were going to leave him at any moment. And he didn't know why.
"Okay, that's a lot," Luke finally broke the growing silence that was making him increasingly sick.
James, on the other hand, was still silent. He didn't even dare look at Luke. At first, Kayleb didn't think it was a bad thing. But as he heard the Alpha werewolf's heart beat faster beneath his gaze, he was painfully aware that something was terribly wrong.
With a worried gleam in his emerald green eyes, he finally looked from Luke, who now had his head in his hands, to James, giving him his full attention. „What's going on?" He asked the other boy his age as understandingly as he could.
A moment later, he saw tears streaming from James' teal-blue eyes. The sight overwhelmed him as he wasn't prepared to comfort anyone. He hadn't expected this reaction at all. But after a few seconds, he seemed completely fine again. Aside from the tiny tears in his eyes and the sad expression on his face, it was indescribable. Kayleb could only tell one thing: James had to scream out his emotions before they would get the better of him.
Even Luke, deep in thought, sensed the change in atmosphere, so he looked up. Their eyes met. Even if it only was for a brief moment.
Suddenly, James jumped up, threw the heavy blanket from his exhausted body, and hugged Luke tightly. It all happened so fast that even Kayleb couldn't have done anything but sit there in amazement.
The lycan was taken aback by this. Mostly because he didn't know why this was happening. But deep down, he had a feeling that he already knew why. After all, he wasn't the only one who saw these things in his dreams - a side effect of the ritual.
His suspicions were confirmed when he heard the older werewolf's crying voice begging for the younger's forgiveness.
While Luke held onto him, irritated.
"It's because of the memories you're trying to hold hidden in your subconscious," Kayleb explained to Luke. "I've seen them. This happens during a bonding ritual. It is normal. As your new Alpha, I need to know everything that happened," his tone was neutral, not showing much emotion. "But it digs up any memories unrelated to the owner's effort to keep them hidden."
"You both knew each other before your home burned to ashes. James was there with his whole pack. He tried to persuade you to go with him, but you refused at first. Then, a man I couldn't recognize pulled you away. Suddenly, after seeing that man's face, you tried to reach James, but it was already too late."
This revelation seemed to have shaken Luke to the core. He turned pale, and his eyes became glossy. He looked like a ghost. His arms hung lifeless on the mattress he was sitting on.
Kayleb could only tell Luke was alive by the hidden light in his eyes, but it still disturbed him deeply.
"So it's true, he burned down my childhood home and killed my family," Luke finally said aloud about what was going through his head. But the words he uttered were nothing short of a nightmare.
For Kayleb, however, everything suddenly made sense. Not just Luke's nightmare but the whole situation he was in. Luke was a born Beta werewolf. He should have been stronger than most of the wolves in his old pack - which consisted almost entirely of "normal" wolves. Not to mention slamming them into place when needed.
Instead, he was treated like an Omega. Not just any Omega, but a breeding Omega. He didn't want to think about how many wolves had taken him against his will to try to breed him. That nobody found it odd that Luke didn't get pregnant infuriated Kayleb. He believes they all knew about Luke's true status in one way or another.
