After dinner, the family called it a night and headed home. Ava left Kairo and Zaire to decide on a room they wanted to crash in while she snuggled up with Zora on Lucky's side of the bed.
There was a storm outside but the harsh winds and distant thundering were soothing to Ava's loud thoughts. The dark sky cast a shadow over the water. The scent of rain circled the bedroom as Ava watched the curtains blow from the open balcony doors. She welcomed the cool air, it made her feel warmer in Lucky's spot.
Ace was fast asleep at the foot of the bed but sleep was a distant lover of Ava's. She had half of her heart near her and the other half hooked up to a machine fighting for his life. She wanted so desperately to change places with him. Maybe God would have spared her if she were the one hooked up to a machine.
She felt so selfish because Lucky was suffering and she didn't have the guts to give up on him yet. His body was in pain and she knew he deserved peace but she wasn't ready to let go yet. There was still so much she wanted to tell him. He changed her life. Because of him, she fought to grow and become a better version of herself.
Her first love. He had her heart in the palm of his hands and handled it so delicately. Her best friend. Her diary. He was her person. Her only person and she was losing him. Their daughter was losing her father and it wasn't fair.
Ava didn't want their daughter to grow up wishing she had a father the way Lucky did. He was supposed to be in her life. He was supposed to watch her grow. He was supposed to spoil her and teach her things a mother couldn't.
Why did it have to be him? He wasn't perfect but he tried to be. He turned his life around and walked a straight line because love changed his life. Love gave him his humanity back. Love reminded him that there was more to life than rage and grief. Love showed him joy. Happiness. Love showed him mercy.
Love was Ava. She was his walking reminder of hope. Of better days.
Why would God take him from her? From their daughter? What did she do to deserve this? Her heart was in agony. It made her sick. She needed him like she's never needed anyone before. He was her reason. The reason she was able to pray so freely. The reason she welcomed God in every aspect of her life.
Lucky was her path in life. She chose him. God could have put him in front of her but she chose him. She decided to give things a try with him. She decided to put her truth in someone else other than her family and God. She welcomed him into her world despite the voices in her head telling her not to. She may have put all her eggs in one basket with Lucky but it was worth the risk. He was her megamillion prize and he earned the key to her heart rightfully so.
But she knew she couldn't fall into a deep depression, Lucky wouldn't want her to. While he was fighting for his life, Ava had a new bundle of joy that needed all the love she could get. For their daughter, she'd try to keep it together. If push comes to shove and they left her no option but to pull the plug, she needed to be ready even if she didn't want to.

"Hello?" Assyria groggily spoke into her phone. She had no idea what time it was and had no intentions of removing her eye mask to check.
"Hey," Essence greeted.
Lowering the phone, Assyria took a deep breath before placing the phone back against her ear, "What made you call?"
"You didn't reply to my texts this morning... are you mad or something?"
"I don't have time to be upset about anything, how was your day?"
