"Did you turn off my alarm?" Ava asked Lucky as she entered the kitchen. It was February the 11th, and the rain and sunlight had finally melted what was left of the snow.
"You were sleeping good," he casually replied.
"I had my alarm set for a reason... why would you do dat?"
"Ava... you were knocked out,"
"So what?! You just messed my entire routine up!"
Caught off guard, Lucky placed the spatula down and turned towards her, "What's all dis smoke about? You've been aggravated by everything I do."
"I have a schedule," she slammed her fist into her palm, "and you messed me up."
"You. Were. Asleep," he spoke slowly as he stared at her.
"THAT'S WHY I HAD MY ALARM SET!" She screamed.
Closing his eyes, Lucky lowered his head and took a deep breath before staring at her, "I was trying to help."
"I have a schedule," she mocked him by speaking slower, "I've been using it for months and you ruined it."
"If dis is about Zora, she's fine."
"Did you bathe her?" She queried, massaging her temple. "Did you feed her? Did you play with her? Helloooo?!"
I'm in tha' fuckin' twilight zone, I just fuckin' know it, he thought as he took another deep breath.
"Why would mess up my routine without asking me first?!"
I'm being punk'd... I gotta be, he chuckled at the thought then stared at her. "You want to argue," he took another deep breath, "I do not have it in me... so tell me wassup?"
Staring at him for a moment, Ava closed her eyes, "I just sa— forget it. It's fine... everything's fine... perfectlyyy fine," she smiled at him before walking away.
Leaning against the counter, Lucky placed the cane down and sighed. This wasn't the Ava he was used to. Never in his life has he ever felt the need to put his hands on a woman but heaven only knows, he had just been tested beyond imagine.
He was beginning to feel as if no matter what he said or done, Ava would continue to shut him out. He just wanted her to know that she didn't have to pretend or keep up the tough guy act. In his defense, he thought things would return to normal now that he was awake but there seemed to be a lot of things that needed to be sorted out.
"Surprised yo ass called me over," Kairo said to Lucky once he opened the door.
"We gotta talk," Lucky mumbled before rolling down the hall.
Looking around at the tools in the foyer, Kairo stepped out of his shoes and made his way into the living room only to find Ava asleep. Looking around for his niece, Kairo headed towards the back until he made it to Lucky's game room. Ace was resting on the carpet in front of Zora as she babbled and laughed to herself.
A bit confused by the dynamic, Kairo made his way over to a stressed out Lucky. "Wassup?"
"What happened?"
Furrowing his brows, Kairo leaned forward and turned towards his in-law, "What you mean?"
Lucky slid back and then sighed, "What happened with Ava?"
Kairo just stared at him. What exactly was he trying to ask?
"You don't know either, huh?"
Kairo slowly shook his head, "I'm lost... why are you asking about her as if she was shot and not you?"
