CHAPTER 13
Pictures?
Amber-
When summer break came I traveled all the way to Toronto to go to my grandma's house, and since my parents knew it wasn't an entertaining visit they allowed me to take one friend and that friend was Lynx. As we carried our bags to my grandma's porch I took in the simple details that made my grandma's house unique. The house itself was pretty simple, with two floors and a basic square window, the house was faded white and it had a simple wooden door with a small garden. I was greeted by grandma's kind face on the door. Grandma Emily had a fairly pretty face, for her age she looked young although she was in her 70's, her curly blond hair had many gray streaks in it and her gray eyes lit up when she looked at me, she enveloped me in a hug and then looked at Lynx and smiled at her. As she let us into our room I looked around at her large quantity of photos. There were pictures of me, my mom, and my parent's wedding picture, there were also pictures of her much younger and a wide arrange of floral decorations and rugs.
As my grandma had us eat lunch she told us that she was going to be out for a while and to do as we please. At first, we played cards but then we decided to look around the house, as there could be a chance we might find a board game around. We were looking at the extra guest room that was used as a storage place and while each of us looked around for something interesting, I came across an old picture of a luxurious old house, besides it, there was a picture of a large group of kids, I could guess around 40, all had serious expressions and looked quite similar, it took me a minute but I found my grandma there, besides my grandma there was nothing in particular to look, but until I gave it one last look I noticed a weird looking girl but since it was a black and white photo the details were vague and if I squinted I could see her thin figure, but that was the most I could see.
Besides the children and the house, there was a picture of my grandma with some data about her on the back of it. The most notable thing about the info was the top part that looked like a signature that read;" Winchester Orphanage". I had heard of the place once, I knew it had burnt down and half the orphans made it out, between them my grandma, of course, she didn't make it unscattered, she had faint scars around her arms and legs and a small one on her right cheek, I had never asked her how she got them but when I asked her she avoided my question, so I left it alone. The little I knew was from an old newspaper that I had found in the library.
After we both were tired from looking around we agreed to go on a break, and while I was drinking some apple juice, Lynx went back to clean up any mess we could have made while looking for stuff and continued with the evening.
Lynx-
What I didn't expect from Amber was that her grandma would be the one and only Emily that I threw at the rosebush. If I hadn't been with Amber right near me I would have probably taken off the magic glamour and given the lady a shock but all I did was smile back. The house wasn't much to talk about, besides a large number of picture frames and objects, and an obsession with florals there was not much of interest.
As I was rummaging around I happened to find a small metal box in the bottom drawer of an old desk in the corner of the room. It was as big as the palm of my hand and it had a very faded-out illustration of flowers, as I opened it I caught the strong smell of old paper and rust. The very first thing I saw was Mrs. Winchester's cold face staring right back at me, the picture was a little faded out but while the paper was yellowish, Mrs. Winchester''s plain black dress and neat updo were as clear as I remembered it, although the photo was in black and white I still grabbed the locket in my neck as a sign of reassurance that the woman in front of me was not going to come out of the photo to scold me. The rest of the contents of the box were a compilation of newspaper cutouts, pictures of the Winchester mansion, photos of Emily through her childhood to teenage years, and at the very bottom, there was a folded piece of paper that looked more new than the rest of the pictures it was slightly yellow and as soon as I read the information in the paper I started panicking. It was a detailed report of every single detail of my life until I left the orphanage, and basically everything up until I met my father; it was filled with pictures of my face in big and small formats. You can assume how I then proceeded to look in every single drawer of the room to find anything else that could have any relation to me, I found medical records and a file that I was sure had burned down with the house.
Being very creeped out by the obvious obsession that Emily had on me. I did what any magic user would do if they found information about them that could ruin their lives, I destroyed it all after leaving an illusion so it would look the same as before. I knew now that I was to stay away from Amber's grandma at all costs.
