I could feel a soft breeze on my nose. In confusion I opened my eyes and they directly saw lips. I blinked a few times and looked up to see Sage asleep. Her mouth was slightly parted and she was softly breathing. I backed up a little bit and stretched my arms. This did not even faze her and I looked around me to even see if I could possibly worm myself out of this cocoon. That's when I remembered the bruising all over my face because shooting pain surrounded my face and I winced. Even when I did that I regretted it. It hurt as well. I peaked up over Sage shoulder to look at the clock and it's a few hours after the store should be open.
I gently slid out of the blankets and softly climbed over Sage and out of the bed. I grabbed a hoodie and some baggy pants. Luckily Sage had a hat lying right there. So I grabbed that. I looked back over at Sage to make sure she was still asleep. I then looked at the gun. I thought about grabbing it just in case. I decided not to. I walked over to a piece of paper I had crumpled over by the trash and un crumpled it. I grabbed a broken pencil I had laying on the counter. I wrote Need to make sure she is okay.
I then put up my hair. I put the hoodie on with the hat and grabbed a kitchen knife. I put it in my pocket and headed to the door. I opened the door and softly closed it behind me. I did not want to wake Sage up. I kept my head down and looked up just a little to see if anyone was around. So far the coast was clear. I started walking down the street and my heartbeat quickened. I had no idea if they were around or if I was being followed. Paranoia was whispering things in my ear. It was so loud I almost ran back home. I looked up and could see the shop nearby. I could not help but start to walk faster.
I made it to the shop and the lights were off. The sign said closed and I tried the door. It was locked. I tried to see inside but it was too dark and all I could was the front desk. I looked around but made sure not to show my face. There was no one around. I shook my hands and started walking back home. Why was the store closed? Was Jane okay? Was she just late? Did the hours change?
A million thoughts were running through my mind. It seemed to waste the time because before I noticed I was walking back into my apartment. I set the knife on the counter and that startled Sage because she jumped up and went to go grab the gun. I threw up my hands and pulled down my hood and took off the hat. She looked back at me and set the gun back down. She rubbed her eyes and blinked a few times. She looked back at me and then her eyes widened. She panicked and said "I told you not to leave! Why did you leave! You know it's not safe!" She got up and walked over to me. She shouted in my face as she grabbed my arm "I can't lose you again" She quickly understood what she said because she took a step back. She looked at the ground and turned red. I smiled and also got very nervous. I said "well you don't have to worry because I'm safe and the shop is closed so I wont be going back" She looked up at me confused. I nodded my head and unzipped my jacket.
She ran her finger through her hair and took a deep breath. I set her jacket back on the giant pile of clothes. I took my hair down from the ponytail and looked at Sage that looked more distraught than I am. I said "I am guessing you had no clue" She shook her head no and looked at me. She almost starts crying again and says "I'm sorry, I really hope she's okay and I really know this is all my fault-" I stop her there by hugging her and she just cried into my shoulder. I understand where she is coming from. The guilt and pain of thinking that everything is your fault. The fear that everything is. I also just needed a hug because everything that has happened is now settling down on me and it feels way too heavy to hold on my own. It breaks my heart to know she truly never meant for anything like this to even happen.
I know it does not change the fact that is has happened
I heard a sliding sound and we both jumped. We both looked at each other and then back towards where we heard the sound. It sounded like it came from the door. I grabbed the knife and slowly walked towards the door. She was directly behind me watching my back. We looked like a combat force team. There was a little envelope on the floor. We both walked over to it. I slowly bent down and picked it up. Then I checked the little peeping hole and saw no one. I turned around and looked at Sage. She asked "anyone there?" I shook my head no and we both walked to the living room. I set the knife down on the counter and looked at the envelope. The front of it said "To Ember '' I stared at it for a moment. I opened it and looked at it. It was a handwritten letter. It was addressed to me and I did not even read it but it was signed "Sincerely from Jane''
