Chapter 23

In confusion I sit there and listen. Sage says "get in here" she then slams the door and says "let me repeat myself what are you doing here" I hear him back up and say "relax kid I just wanted to make sure you were good" Sage responds with "yeah well you know how to get in touch with me, I told you to never come here" He raises his voice a little as he says "yeah well I got a bit worried when you asked for a gun and then disappeared" She snapped back "yeah and I told you to not ask questions about that and you aren't going to get any" He chuckles and says "you have always been stubborn, you know that? Gosh every since you were a kid you ha-" she cut him off by shushing him.
    There was a moment of silence when I heard the gun hit the counter softly. She then says "I need you to keep a secret with your life" He does not verbally respond but I guess he nodded because Sage then called my name. I took that as a sign to stand up. When I do I lock eyes with whoever this Bert is. He has one blue eye and one brown one. Half of his hair is gray and the other is black. It's short and slicked back. He's a tall man with some fluff to him. His cheek bones are still sharp though. He has a slight scruffy beard.
    Sage then says "Bert meet Ember, Ember meet Bert" He raises his hand for a gesture of hello and I give him a simple nod. He then looks at Sage and goes "so this is why you did not want me over here" She looks up at the ceiling and says "no its because we are in some trouble and don't want you to be followed here" he nods his head and looks at me. He asks "so this is your place" I nod my head yes. He then says "thank you for giving my darling here a place to stay" I smile and say "of course, it really is no problem at all, well okay she has been a bit of a handful but i'm okay with it" She glares at me and I smile. He smiles and says "Yeah she's always been a bit of a trouble maker" I giggle and say "oh do I know about that one" She scoffs and says "guys I am right here". We both ignore her and keep talking.
    He then asks "so how did you two meet" I say "out in the park" he raises his eyebrows and says "oh so your the one she told me saved her life" I nod my head yes and he says "well I am very grateful that you did. We already almost lost her once" I nod in agreement and say "yeah I heard about that, it must have been pretty scary" He nods and takes a deep breath. He says "yeah my whole world was going to end if I did not have her in my life anymore" I softly smile and nod my head. He continues "yeah I wish she would have found a better solution but that was our only one, I am just glad it wasn't worse than it is" I tilted my head in confusion. I ask "worse than what is?" he looks at me and says "The work that was done. The brain thing" I nodded my head and looked at the counter.
    Sage then says "okay well i think socializing time is up I think it's time for you to go back home" She then grabbed the sleeve of his shirt and started to pull on it. He slowly follows but says "but I really like your friend and I wanna get to know her better" he smiled and Sage glared up at him, still pulling on his shirt and says "well I dont care its time for you to go" He laughs and he waves bye to me and Sage pushes him out of the door. She closes it in his face and I chuckle.
    She glared at me as she walked past me. I turn and watch her walk to the bed. I said "So that was a fun encounter, so who was that?" She sat down on the bed and looked at me. She says "that's my dad" I raise my eyebrows in shock. She smiled in embarrassment and her face turned red. I walked over to her and said "okay that was your dad! Oh wow I really see where you get your character from" She glares up at me. She then gets into bed and this time is by the wall and flips on her side so she's facing the wall. I sit on the bed and poke her shoulder. I then say "oh come on why are you getting so shy on me. There is no need to be embarrassed" she does not even react or look at me so I get the hint I should probably stop talking. I look at the time and it is pretty late and I decide that maybe it is time to go to bed.
    So I pull the covers over me as I lay down. I felt Sage flip over where she was now facing me and I could feel her heat behind me and I felt safe. I have no idea why but I still trust her after all of this. I know none of this makes sense but I do. I yawned and noticed how tired I really was. I fell asleep with a small grin on my face.
