Chapter 28

September 29th, 4052
Bert and Jane shuffled into the room. Ice laced on their jackets and them shivering. They got in the living room and still were looking at the ground trying to make it that far. I walked up to Bert and grabbed his sleeve. He looked at me and saw how scared I was. I pointed to Sage who was still laying down on the bed. He froze and walked over to her. He was very slow and cautious. He reached her side and got down on his knees. I could hear Sage mumble something. He shushed her and held her hand as he rested his forehead on the top of her hand. He looked up at her and quietly said "close your eyes and rest, I got you" She did as he said and he sat there for a few moments longer.
I looked over to Jane who was still shivering where she stood and I pulled out a chair for her to sit on. She looked up at me and then down at the chair and kindly took a seat. She huddles up into herself. I look around and find another spare blanket I have just laying around. I wrapped her up in it. I noticed I still was holding the gun and decided to set it down on the counter. The room was silent again other than Jane's chattering teeth and the soft howl of wind. My soft sobs seemed to echo off the walls louder than they were when they came from me. It seemed like it was a nightmare that never ends. It is one thing after another. Yet no one told me it was going to be this hard. Since my parents are not around anymore it makes sense why I was never warned.
Jane got up and wrapped her arms around me as I huddled over the counter. Her warm body was soothing and comforting. It made things seem to wash away. It has been a long time since I was held as I cried. The clock ticked letting us know it was midnight. It seemed like it was still early. Like time had not passed at all. Bert walked over to us and he said "she will be fine, it is because the power and all towers are out from weather damage. Her special ability helps with half her motor skills so since it's offline those body parts are too. Her organs still work but she won't be able to move half her body till they come back online." I looked up at him and said "that's what I thought but I got scared because she just collapsed into my arms and all I could think of was that she was dying and I had no clue how to help her." He interrupted me and said "I know darling, I know."
I took a deep breath and said "is there anything we can do or is this just a wait it out thing" He looked at me and just shrugged his shoulders. He said "honestly I didn't even know about this till a week ago. She kept it a secret out of fear of my judgment. I always spoke badly about cyborgs so she was scared I would not accept her." Jane looked up and said "wait what" She slowly stopped hugging me and we both looked at her. I turned to Jane and said "uh to make a long story short she was about to die from brain cancer and decided to take matters into her own hands and got a computer thingy into her brain so she would not die. Now the people are trying to kill us for money" Jane just blankly stared at me. She probably was just as stunned to find this out as I was when I found it out. I looked at both of them and said "wait what are you both doing here" Jane looked at me and said "well I was coming here looking for you to make sure you got my letter and that you were okay. Then I found out that this place was falling apart so I got worried about my store and checked on it. I checked and everything was okay. I then saw Bert here fighting with someone and when he was running away pieces of paper flew out of his coat. So the paper flew towards me and I grabbed it. I saw it was a letter from you. Then I chased after them realizing that he knew you guys and that he was in trouble. I knew a short cut so I cut in front of them and-" Bert cut her off and continued the story saying "she ran in front of me and screamed ' keep going' so I listened and kept running. She grabbed a pipe and when I got right by her she swung and knocked that son of the gun right in the face. I am guessing he was one of those cyborgs -" Jane cut back in and said "because his face started to spark and he twitched like he was having a seizure so we left him there he introduced himself. I handed him back the letter and asked ' who gave this to you' he hesitated and said 'what's it to you' I smiled and said ' i'm Jane and Ember is my friend'. He smiled and said 'well then that's for you'. We made the decision to walk back to your apartment to check on yall and well here we are" I smiled and looked at both of them as they stared at each other. They both were smiling like fools and I cleared my throat to clear the tension. I jumped when suddenly the wind stopped and the lights flickered back on. All three of us ran over to Sage's side to see if she was okay. She was still breathing and her dad gently grabbed her hand and said "Sage baby are you okay"
