The abiant fog was getting thicker the more we walked into it. Slowly we could not see more than a few feet in front of us. I got closer to Sage and she put her arm around me which was indeed very comforting. I looked around us to see if anyone was following us or was around. No one was and it felt as if we were floating. The wall of fog around us created a little bubble and all you could see in the distance was hazy lights. It honestly was kind of peaceful. It created a sense of safety and security. I mean Sage helped with that too but that's not the point. The air was harsh to breathe yet soothing. It was like I was in the shower.
I looked over at Sage and said " I sure hope you know where we are going because I sure don't" Sage hummed and said "yeah of course I do" I smiled and said "do we still haft to go through the sewers or do you think the fog is thick enough that we are safe" She hesitated and said "we might be fine to just walk over there" I could not help but smile to myself and she noticed and said "i said might, that's not a for sure thing" I scoffed and said "wow look who came to rain on my parade" I moved so her arm was not around me anymore and she looked at me. She rolled her eyes and kept walking. I noticed that her arm gave me some warmth because now I was feeling a tad bit chilly.
What seemed like hours later we started to see less and less of giant towers of buildings and more small ones. The fog was still there but the roads were more broken. The trash was scattered here and there almost perfectly. I noticed Sage straightened up and seemed to be getting a bit protective and almost to make her seem more tough. Which in my opinion did but I knew her well enough like it was kind of funny to watch. I decided to do the same so we were not seen as weak. I knew by now we had to be in a bad part of town and how it probably was not the best time to be when our vision is kind of low. It was still light enough to see around but sure was pretty dark for it being day time. All the cold freeze has created a nice little sauna. Yet it was kind of the opposite. I think I was cold because I was a little damp from all this fog.
We got to a cross road which seemed to have only one building on it. The rest was pretty much just piles of metal laying around and trash. I am guessing that this was the house of one of the construction workers based on the tractor out back. Sage looked around slowly, almost scanning the area. She stopped and looked in one direction. She hesitated and I looked at where she was looking. I could not see anything so it made me wonder what she was looking at. I watched her as she looked another direction and looked for a second. I said "are we lost" she said "nope" then she walked right in front of me to the left. I was stunned so I stood there for a moment and then ran to catch up to her. I walked beside her but she was walking a lot faster now. Almost like we were being followed and I instantly started to worry.
So I asked "hey is everything okay" She looked at me and said "in general or with me" I rolled my eyes and said well I guess both" She did not respond right away and kind of hesitated. She took a deep breath and said "in general yes everything is going swell" I waited for a second to see if she would continue and she did not so I said "and with you" she took a deep breath again and slowly said "that not important" I slowed down a little bit and she noticed and looked back at me. She said "now we don't have time to argue about this, come on and let's get there" I knew she was right so I sped up to match her pace. I wanted to say something but it was not the right time. I did not want to argue with her. I just wanted her to know that I care about her even after all this. That she is still my friend.
Soon enough we reached a place that was bare and dry. There were piles of sand and abandoned buildings were scattered here and there. The fog was not as thick and I could see a lot farther now. Out in the distance you could see the faint outline of the forest. It was small but it was still tall. You could see that everything around it was preserved but it was still sad to see it standing out there all alone. Everything out here is so decayed and broken and yet something so beautiful lies in the middle of it. Like it was fighting to survive in a place where it did not belong.
Yet it was still so far away. It makes me wonder how I made it out there in the first place. How I ran this far and how I even knew where to go. The road was just dirt now and bits and pieces of gravel. There was wind out here but it was very much natural. It was not as fresh as the city air but that was because of how much we pollute it and destroy it constantly. Even though we make our own, it's at the cost of the whole world. We kept walking and soon enough it seemed like we were slowly making it closer and closer. Yet we still have miles to go.
