Sage looked at me with a scared and confused face. She slowed down and set the mail on the counter slowly as if I had her at gunpoint. I smiled jokingly and lunged at her. She threw her hands up in a karate pose and we both giggled and I said "I need you to take me to the forest. She stopped smiling and blinked a few times. She was stone cold serious now and said "you know that's illegal and also why would you want to go back there, it could get us both killed" I rolled my eyes and walked to the fridge and while I opened it looking for a water I said "when did you become to tied to the law" she scoffed and said "I have never followed the law" I grabbed my water and closed the fridge. I turned around and then leaned my back on it and said " exactly my point right there, so are you taking me or not" She glared at me and said "we are not out of the shadows yet, they still are wanting both of us dead and they will wait until the right moment to pounce" I smirked and took a drink of my water. She glared at me. Once I was done I said slowly "that my friend is the thrill of it" She clenched her jaw and I knew she wanted that adrenaline rush as well. That constant fear that at any moment we might have to fight for our lives.
She looked at the floor and said "maybe tomorrow" I groaned in protest and said "but the day is still so young and come on it sounds like so much fun" she sat at the counter and put her face into her hands and I walked over to her. I gently put my hand on her back and said "if you don't take me you know I will go on my own" She lifted her face from her hands and said "that's what is keeping me from saying no". I smiled and excitedly said "so you are taking me" She took a deep breath and I started to jump up and down in joy. She said "now you haft to follow my directions, do you understand" I stopped jumping and looked at her and said "okay I guess" She said "well we need to go to downtown and then go through the sewer system to get there" I looked at her confused and said "I know I did not go that way when I went" she walked over to the night stand where the gun is and said "oh I know, you were stupid and ran right to it which makes no sense but you managed to not get caught" I smiled and said "exactly so maybe if we just right to it then we would not get caught" She turned around and glared at me and said "do you want me to show you where it is or not" I rolled my eyes and raised my arm in a gesture to lead the way. She headed to the door and then hesitated. I walked up behind her and asked "what's the problem" she took a second and said "I am not sure if I am ready to be the reason why you almost die again" I gently patted her back and said " I promise that I don't blame you for that, I understand why it all happened now and I understand that it was not your fault" she lowered her head and looked at the floor. She took a deep breath and then walked to the door. I said "should we let Jane know where we are going" She opened the door half way and said "that's actually a good idea" So we headed to the pet shop. The streets were once again empty and if I did not know any better I would believe we lived in a ghost town. For the first time in days I saw a package truck drive down the street. It was going a bit slow but that's what it normally does. Most of those trucks drove slow and always seemed to be going somewhere not important. Yet everyone knows they go to the stores and shops all around these blocks.
We arrived at the pet store and walked in. Jane seemed to be shocked to see us because when she did she jumped a little bit. She smiled big and said "can I help you two fine young ladies with anything" I smiled at her and said "just gonna stop in and say we are going for a road trip and we will be back by tonight" Her smiled fell and she said "okay sounds good" I noticed it and honestly made me worry a bit so I asked "everything okay" She smiled softly and said "of course" I glared at her and Sage grabbed my arm and led me out of the store. We walked down the street and the fog was starting to lift up. It created the perfect picture perfect moment. It made me get a little lost in thought.
Obviously something was wrong and maybe it was her just worrying about me or maybe it was something else. Maybe it had to do with her and maybe what she said last night and today was really weighting on her. That she is getting older and soon enough she's not going to be able to be here. That is something everyone subconsciously fears. Losing the chance to enjoy your happiness and knowing that when you leave it's going to hurt pretty much anyone who loves you. At the same time it's also how life works. That's the sad truth. Everything has to end at some point. No matter how hard we fight it, it will always happen no matter what. It's a never ending cycle that is beautiful and ugly at the same time. A cycle that teaches us lessons and helps us grow and learn but also teaches us to enjoy life. To enjoy every moment we have. This is because at any moment we could lose that light at the end of the tunnel and you're the light at the end of someone else's tunnel.
Jane in a way taught me more than I thought she did. She is the type of person who stays with both feet on the ground and looks at every option before making a decision. The person who you go to for advice because their level headed and take their time to think before they speak. The type of person who you can go to no matter the problem and they always have a solution. It is something I admire deeply because it is not something you see often, not something most people do. These people nowadays are so bland and quick to speak. They do not think of any words and they speak with no enthusiasm behind their sentences. It seems like there are robots in a world where robots are not allowed to exist yet everyone is so brainwashed that they are exactly that. Yet they are flesh and blood. There is not much difference other than robots last longer and probably will get the job done right ninety percent of the time. Jane is not like them though and I do not blame Bert for falling for her. She is a great person and will always be a great mother. Will always be a good friend and will always be someone I never forget.
