ADONIS
It was Sunday afternoon and I was popping over to my mum's house as I hadn't chilled with her in a while. It was officially June now and I was mentally preparing myself for E's death anniversary which was also hard for the two of us whenever July came around. No matter how many years it had been, it never got easier dealing with the loss; it just became more manageable because we had learnt to accept it.
The week had been a busy one. Between negotiating with Neema and filling my stressful moments with Hazel's company, I had barely taken a moment to myself.
I would say the most I had been able to relax so far, was the spa treatment Hazel and I had gone to the day before. We got massages, sat in the sauna, did some swimming and just relieved as much stress as we could. We stayed the night at the hotel and spent the evening conversing and talking about anything our minds landed on. In the morning I dropped her home before I drove myself home and napped for a little while longer.
Ringing the doorbell, I took a step back as I waited for my mum to open up the door.
Within seconds, the door was being opened and my mum's beautiful face appeared in the doorway. "My baby." She smiled as she extended her arms. "Give me some kisses."
I laughed into the hug as I squeezed her. How this woman always had so much joy was beyond me. From her attire it was obvious she had just come back from church which probably contributed to all the good energy she was radiating.
After planting a kiss on her cheek, I stepped into the house as she closed the door behind me. "What's up mummy? How are you?" I asked her.
"I'm good now that you've finally remembered I exist." She laughed jokingly. "I just bought a new bookshelf that I need to fix. I was going to call someone to do it for me but since you're here, can you please fix it? You can also help me hoover the stairs and the landing."
My face instantly dropped. This woman always had me doing chores whenever I came over. If it wasn't cleaning, then it was fixing. On an unlucky day like today, she'd have me doing both. "Alright cool."
"Fabulous." She sang as she collapsed in her sofa. "It's warm today; have some water or juice or something. I put some in the fridge before I left for church this morning. There's also some fried rice from yesterday."
I thanked her and took myself into the kitchen where she had some bright, beautiful fresh flowers on show. The scent of her favourite lemon disinfectant was prominent, and that made it obvious she had probably cleaned the kitchen before I came over.
After chugging down some juice and scanning through the fridge to see if there was anything else other than rice to eat, I stole some of her grapes and popped them in my mouth.
When I eventually went back into the living room, mum had popped on her glasses and was scrolling through her phone. "I need advice, mummy." I told her as I sat next to her.
"Hmm." She hummed with a raised brow. "What's going on?"
I sighed to myself, genuinely unsure how to break the news about Neema to her softly. How do you tell your mum you've gotten someone she doesn't particularly like, pregnant? It was silent as I looked for the right words to tell her what was going on. I think what was making the situation worse was that I wasn't just telling her I got someone pregnant, I also needed to tell her about Neema's unreasonable marriage plans and the crazy ultimatum she was giving me.
"Am I having a grandchild?" She asked after a couple minutes of silence. A mother truly knows her child better than anyone, because how the hell did she guess so accurately?
