I've lived my whole life working, I can't remember a time when I wasn't trying to find a way to make money. My parents have been out of the picture for a while and since I could remember I have always been alone, fending for myself. I was sixteen and practically living alone until my parents randomly came home and dropped off Spear for me to take care of.
Now suddenly my teenage life or what was left of it was completely taken away from me.I was 16 when I had to drop out of high school a year and a half from graduating. I made sure to work extra hard so that I was able to graduate early but going to school and working a part-time job wasn't enough for me to pay the bills and take care of a one-year-old baby that wouldn't stop fucking crying. I had to take up a full-time job at the age of 17 so that two-year-old Spear had clothes to wear for the winter. It was no longer about me anymore.
"I will be back in an hour," I said stripping out of my hideous apron. My manager Bill rolled his eyes and tossed the rag he was using to clean the counter onto his shoulder.
"You said that yesterday and it took you two hours to come back," Bill said raising a brow. I sighed and gave him a pleading look. Bill was probably one of the worst bosses I have ever had, and I've had a lot of bosses throughout the years. He hated when I was late yet he knew about my situation. There was not an inch of empathy in this man. If this job didn't pay as well as it did I would be out the door. But I needed the money.
"I know but I have to pick up Spear from school and drop him at the sitter's," I said grabbing my purse. "I promise I will rush" I yelled jogging out of the bar. There were plenty of workers on and probably two customers there, Bill was just always in a shitty mood and expected me to work twenty-four seven. It was three o'clock on a Tuesday, who was coming into the bar at this time?
I quickly got into my car and turned the key in the ignition only for it to not start. "No no no, not today please not today!" I yelled punching the steering wheel. I was already late as it is. It took me ten tries for the car to start and fifteen minutes till I was on the road to his school. I hope he isn't scared alone.
The moment I got to his school I ran inside. "Vee!" Spear yelled running my way. I breathed out a breath of relief as I hugged Spear's small body against mine.
"Are you ok? I'm sorry I'm late bud" I said ruffling his hair. He giggled and shook his head, his smile made me calm, I loved this boy with everything in me, I couldn't imagine what life would be like without him. Even though I despised the living hell out of my parents, this was the one good thing they did.
"It's ok" he shrugged his shoulders. "I was with my friends" he pointed behind him at two little kids sitting at a bench watching us.
"Hi" I waved. The little girl jumped off the bench and made her way toward me confidently.
"Angel," she said holding out her hand, her nails were painted a sparkly pink matching her energy. She was absolutely adorable. Her black hair was slicked back into a ponytail which was tied with a nice big pink bow.
"Davina... and who are you?" I said resting my hands on my knee and looking at the little boy beside her. He stared at me then at his shoes. Hmm, shy. Noted. I looked between both of them and caught similar features. Their doe-like eyes were bright silver and their skin was a smooth olive tone. I was entranced by two little kids.
"That's my brother, Adriano" Angel pointed to the boy beside her. He gave her a serious look and huffed. "He doesn't like me giving out his name" she whispered leaning close to me.
"Oh? Is he undercover?" I said dramatically while narrowing my eyes. Spear laughed and swung my arm that he tightly held on to. Angel shrugged and fluffed out her matching pink dress, I guess it's pretty obvious what her favourite colour is.
