"Really, what do you wear to an art museum?" I scan each item of clothing that is hung in my closet, non of which complimented an art gallery. I had recently gone shopping for the first time in years, granted I had only bought work clothes which is why I was struggling so much to find an outfit.
"Why don't we just go shopping?" Dalia said midway into a bite of food. I sigh and take a step back to look at my closet as a whole. I had no intention of going shopping once more just to find a dress for one night, it was a waste of money.
With my new regular pay cheque, I had enough money to pay bills, buy food, and get myself a few things that I wanted, it wasn't a lot of leftover money but it was more than I was used to.
I had started saving as well just in case I needed something to lean back on when the job falls from under me. It's hard for me to expect anything else.
"How about this?" I hold up a regular red dress for Dalia to give her input on. She almost choked on her food when she sees my face.
"You're serious?" She asks, "You wore that to our high-school dance, there's no way in hell you're wearing it to this," Dalia placed her bowl down on the floor and gets up from the bed, she yanks the dress from my hold and throws it behind her so it lands where she sat previously.
"Hey," I complain, "that dress is cute."
"Every time I think you're joking you're not." She sympathizes with me while patting my shoulder, it doesn't last long when she pushes me over and starts to look in my closet herself.
"What's the matter with this dress," I pick up the dress and mesh the material between my fingers. "It's a nice fabric and cute colour."
"The design is straight out of a cheesy two thousand movie that got a two-star rating on it, the style is dead." Dalia sighs and drops her hands off the clothes. "Yeah, a shopping trip is in need."
"I'm not going shopping Dalia, I'm sure I can find an outfit somewhere" I push her out of my way and kneel on the floor so I can go through the pile of clothes that fell off the hangers. While digging, the doorbell rings through the house, I hear Spear running through the hallway and into my room with curiosity.
"Who is it?" He jumps around with his toy car in his hand.
"I don't know buddy we haven't even checked," I laugh and continue to throw around the clothes.
"We'll go check" Dalia holds out her hand for Spear which he latches onto quickly, they don't say any more to me before walking out of the room and leaving me alone.
Moments pass before Spear is back in the room and plopping himself on my bed. I pause from picking out something to wear and put my attention on him fully.
"Who was at the door?" I ask him.
"Emilio, Jackson and Xavier, Dalia told me to wait up here" he shrugs his shoulders and briskly runs over the fact that there were three extra people in the house.
"What?" I stand up and brush the dust and lint off of my pants. "Let's go see," I walk out with Spear trailing along, he's making car sounds as he trails the toy one across the walls we walk past.
"What's going on?" I say confused, I walk down the stairs and head toward their huddled figures. When they stare at me their faces go flat. "What's with the blank stares?"
"They just came to bring me something," Dalia says with a smile. I cross my arms and wait for another answer, but when nothing comes out of their mouth, I nod.
"Ok, and all of you had to come?" The door is open which works to my advantage as I see cars lined up along the road. "What's with all the people tagging along?"
