"Are you serious?" I grunted overwhelmed while staring at my broken-down car. The worker shrugged and fixed his cap.
"From a professional's point of view, I say toss the car altogether. If you fix it now the longest it will last is a month." fucking hell.
"How much." I pressed my lips together and ran my hand along the white car. It was my father's, his father gave it to him when he was a teenager and he gave it to me well left it for me. It was the last thing I had that belonged to my parents and it was all broken down.
"Five hundred" my jaw dropped at his words. There was no way in hell I could afford that. "I can maybe squeeze it to four-fifty but that's the lowest. There's a lot that needs to be done" he said patting my car roughly. "I'll let you think about it," he said walking away and leaving me alone with the car in a garage full of tools.
I entered the car and ran my hand along the dashboard. I started to get more and more emotional as I took in the fact that this would most likely be the last time I would be in this car. It was all kinds of fuck but to be fair so was I. And I loved this car, I wasn't ready to give it up.
"It was good while it lasted" I whispered letting tears fall down my cheeks and my head to drop on the steering wheel. "Fuck" I yelled staring to punch the car furiously. "Fuck, fuck, fuck" I swore repeatedly as more tears fell. I stopped punching the car as my hands started to throb and my swears turned into sobs. My thread had snapped. I was more broken than the car I was sitting in.
I sat in the car for what felt like ages before hearings knock to my right. Quickly I wiped my tears and looked to my side. Spear. I exhaled and opened the door. "Hey buddy," I said sniffling and grabbing his small body so that he could sit on my lap.
"What's wrong?" he asked whipping my wet face. I shook my head and ran my fingers through his soft hair.
"We have to say goodbye to old Eddie here," I said gesturing to the car. Spear and I had named the car a couple of years ago it was a little thing to shed light on our shitty situation.
"That's ok. We can get a better one right?" he smiled hopefully. Nodding my head I smiled widely and gave the car one last long stare.
"Right," I said. It felt like I was leaving a part of me behind. A part of my parents. I now no longer had any connection to them. Except for Spear of course, and just like the car they left both things for me to take care of.
"Here" Spear said digging into his pocket and fetching out a lollipop. "The lady at the front desk gave me it" he handed it to me with a large smile.
"Thank you," I said grabbing it from his little painted hands.
"Are you happy now?" he asked me.
"I am now." I poked his little dimple and opened the car door. "Let's get going, we have to catch the train." I lifted Spear onto the ground and grabbed his hand.
"I'm tired," he said yawning and leaning closer to me. I looked at him then at the car.
"Me too."
I held a sleeping Spear in my arm as I u locked the many locks on my door. "Finally" I heard behind me. "Where have you been," Dalia said grabbing the keys and opening the door for me. I smiled thankfully and walked Spear to the couch.
"At the mechanics," I whispered placing a blanket on top of his innocent body. His red hair covered his face which I brushed away before looking at Dalia. She looked down at Spear than at me.
"Oh yeah. How did that go?" she asked now following me into the kitchen.
"It's five hundred dollars to fix, and even then it will only last a month maximum" I grabbed a cup before filling it with tap water and filling my stomach with it.
