SUNLIGHT STREAMED through my curtains, awaking me just as my alarm went off. I sighed, wacking the alarm clock on the floor and sat up in bed, the rays of sun no longer shining in my eyes.

I stretched and let out a yawn before there was a knock on my door. I groaned, "Come in." I assumed that it was Maddy, armed with a pillow to come and wake me up like she usually did, but my eyebrows furrowed when I came face to face with mum and dad.

"Lia, have you seen Maddy?" Mum asked me desperately. I shook my head, tearing back my duvet covers, "No, why?"

"Her uniform's gone." Dad told me. I shrugged, "Maybe she just went to school early? You know she does that sometimes."

Mum shook her head, "Most of her clothes and her rucksack is gone too..."

My lips parted and I stood up beside my bed, "What are you saying?"

Mum turned to look up at dad, "Do you think she-"

"Ran away? Couldn't say I'd be surprised." He replied, his jaw locked. I looked down at the ground - I had never heard them use that tone with one another before, and it was scaring me.

Obviously seeing my reaction, dad spoke up, "I'm sure she's safe, wherever she is."

"Do you want me to stay and help look for her?" I asked them. Although, I'd rather have insisted to stay than ask them.

Mum shook her head, "No, you go on to school, pet. We'll let you know if we find her." She told me, placing a comforting hand on my arm to reassure me. I don't think she realised it, but the fear in her voice was unmissable.

I nodded and sighed, "Okay."

"Lia!"

I heard my name being called from down the corridor. Maddy was not at school so I was hoping desperately that mum and dad would find her soon.

I span around and smiled softly when I saw Rhydian. He walked over to me, his expression morphing into one of concern. He placed his hands on my arms, "Hey, you okay?"

I shook my head, "Maddy's ran off. I haven't seen her since yesterday evening and I didn’t see her last night. Mum and dad are out looking for her but if they don't find her soon then..."

I trailed off, not wanting to think about the possibility that she could be in danger or worse.

Immediately, he pulled me into a hug, "I'm sure she's fine. Your parents will find her soon." He reassured me in a gentle tone.
