I WOKE up to bright rays of sun dancing on my eyelids. The curtains had somehow blew apart in the night making a streak of light flood into my room. I squinted my eyes to block out the sun and rolled out of bed to open the curtains.

My eyes adjusted to the intense light and I watched gleefully as our elderly Welsh Mountain Pony, Gypsy, cantered around the field with Astra, my 16hh dapple gray mare.

Waking up and watching the horses galloping around the fields always was the best start to my day, and I wouldn't change it for the world. I took a quick shower and put on my yard clothes. I shoved on my wellies and went to the feed room.

Our sheep were now the first to feed considering that two of them were lambing. Spring had always been my favourite season. I loved feeding the lambs and helping out with the births. We always let Tom and Shannon help name the newborns and I couldn't wait to welcome these lambs into the world - I only had a couple more weeks to wait.

"Morning!" I called to the sheep as I walked through the gate into the sheep field. I laughed as six of them ran over to me and our two pregnant ones waddle up from the back of the field. I poured the feed into three buckets for them to share and did my checks on our two pregnant sheep while they were distracted with the feed. Everything seemed to be in order, so I put the feed and equipment away and made my way to the stables.

I refilled the four hay nets and changed the water. It was then that Maddy decided to show up, "Oh, glad you could be so kind to come and help!"

She rolled her eyes and rolled up her sleeves, "Sorry! My alarm broke."

"Of course it did," I told her before muttering to myself, "For the sixth time..."

"I'll do the feed buckets and sweep the yard if you get them in from the field. Deal?" She asked. "Deal." I replied.

I immediately ran to the fence and ducked under it, making my way into the field. I pulled our two bays in first, Major and Rowen. Major was our 17.4hh bay and was our mom and dad's shared horse. Rowen was our rescued 16.3hh bay, Maddy's horse. She was found on the side of a motorway some years ago, probably left behind by a gypsy camp, or so we presumed.

Maddy took the lead ropes and gently led them into their stalls. I went and grabbed Gypsy too and she waddled her little legs into her stall and immediately dug into her hay net.

I went back through the fence and whistled for Astra. Her head lifted from the floor and she immediately galloped towards me. "Morning, my darling!" I greeted her happily. I led her from the field into her stall and, like she usually did, instantly went straight to her water bucket.

Me and Maddy gave each other a tired high five and half ran, half jogged back inside. I kicked of my wellies and grabbed my blouse and leggings from the clean washing basket.
