SUDDENLY, we were no longer human.
We ran through the forests, so quickly that clouds of dust appeared behind us and the trees rushed past us in a blur. Our paws hit the ground as we sprinted, the night sky blanketing our figures.
It felt extraordinary.
All my worries and stresses about our decision suddenly vanished under the light of the full moon and I felt alive.
I felt free, running with my pack through the night, having enough energy to fulfil this experience to the highest extent.
But, the tables turned as suddenly an irresistible scent was smelt from quite a distance away. And, our wolves, being unable to resist such a thing, ran straight towards it.
☾︎
I woke up feeling dreadful. A sharp pain shot through my side as I sat up, my back resting against a tree trunk. I saw Maddy laying down a few metres away, and Rhydian also fast asleep, snuggled up against a rock as if it were a pillow.
I could barely remember anything from what happened last night. It wasn’t a strange thing to forget when you're a wolf. You still have your human, but it's suppressed so deeply inside of you that it's easy to forget simple events that played out.
The strange part was the bad energy I felt the moment I woke up.
I slowly shuffled my way into a comfortable sitting position as my eyes drifted around the forest. I could locate nothing that could imply anything bad.
I rubbed my head and stood up, the pain in my side beginning to fade away. I slumped against the tree trunk behind me, rubbing the side of my face, tiredness overwhelming me.
"Maddy... Maddy, Rhydian... wake up."
The two of them stirred before waking up. They slowly sat up as I did only moments ago, before prying their eyes open. As they locked eyes with me, their expressions mirrored mine.
It seemed like I wasn't the only one who had a bad feeling.
☾︎
We quickly made our way back to the house, walking as quickly as possible to get our most likely annoyed parents out of the den. No, not annoyed, furious.
I shook the thought away, listening in on my friend's conversation, "I remember the scent," Maddy began, "Then it went dark... then I saw that man."
Rhydian nodded, "Yeah, he smelt bad."
"I remember seeing Tom and Shan..." I reminisced.
"So we were trapped?" Rhydian questioned aloud.
Maddy shrugged, "We must've been."
"But they set us free." Rhydian stated.
The three of us came to a standstill in the back garden of the farmhouse. I bit my lip, "We probably owe Tom and Shannon our lives."
We had finally put the pieces of the puzzle together. We were running, sedated, trapped, then set free... and they would never know that they saved our lives.
Maddy shook her head, "We can't even thank them."
The three of us sighed, regret, fear, and gratitude washing over us all at once. I couldn't have been more thankful to have the friends I did in that moment. We were reckless, and our best friends saved our lives, unknowingly, out of the good of their hearts.
"What are you going to tell your parents?" Rhydian asked us, an anxious expression on his face.
I breathed out a laugh, "The truth." Maddy nodded in agreement.
His eyebrows furrowed, "Why?"
"Because he could come back." Maddy said, the regret of last nights event clear in her expression.
"And they've got a right to know." I stated the truth. We deserved whatever punishment they had in store.
He nodded, "Okay. I'm coming with you." He told us determinedly.
"No." We both told him.
His lips parted in disbelief, "What? Let me take the blame." He pushed.
"No." I said a little harsher than before. Maddy nodded, "This was our choice, although..." She turned to me, "We're in so much trouble."
I nodded, biting my lip, "Yeah, I'm starting to wonder if they're gonna eat us."
They both chuckled lightly, and I found myself laughing too. Maddy sighed, looking over at the dreaded building before turning back to Rhydian, "But we'll see you soon."
I scoffed, "Yeah, in the next fifty years or so. We might be lucky enough to get away with forty five if we're good."
He chuckled, "When are you two ever good?"
Maddy pushed his arm lightly before making her way over to the house. Me and Rhydian were left standing in the morning sunshine.
He looked at me carefully, "You sure you don't want to split the blame? I don't mind."
I shook my head with a smile, "It's okay. And besides, me and Maddy will be able to face hurricane mum."
He laughed a little, shaking his head at the ground with a smile. I bit back a smile before shoving his shoulder lightly, "I'll see you Monday... I hope."
"But that's too long." He pouted.
I rolled my eyes, "Look, me and Maddy are going to be kept under lock and key this weekend, literally. It's only two days." I reassured him, but even saying those words made my heart heavy.
He sighed lightly, barely a trace of a smile left on his lips, "Well then, see you in the next fifty years, petal."
I chuckled, slowly walking backwards towards the house, "See you soon Romeo."
Then it was the dreaded time to face my infuriated parents.
