THE FOUR of us sat at the dining room table, suitcases and clutter piled on it, mum and dad stuffing everything they could into them. Our parents moved swiftly around the room, taking frames down from the wall, taking apart furniture, collecting family heirlooms; it was crazy. Just this morning everything was perfect and now... we had to leave.

They had been telling us since we got back to start packing, but neither me or Maddy had moved a muscle. We didn't want to go, none of us did, but it was time to face the truth.

With a heavy heart, I stood up from my seat and walked up the stairs, not bothering to close the door behind me. I looked at each and every photo I had stuck to my wall, fairy lights stung in between them, making them glow and stand out.

A tear slipped down my cheek, looking at the photo I had framed a couple of months ago of the five of us, together. We had just gone swimming in the lake, so our hair was a complete mess and we were all pulling silly faces, but it was one of my favourite memories of us.

I sighed, pulling out a cardboard box from underneath my desk and began shoving whatever was of importance to me inside it. My art things, photos, my camera, anything.

I heard a soft knock at the door, and when I looked up, Maddy was standing there, fresh tears welling in her eyes. I stood up from the ground and pulled her into a sisterly hug.

Once we pulled apart, she sighed, "I can't believe this."

I nodded, "I know..."

Neither of us had anything to say. Our hearts were heavy with the grief of our friendship with Tom and Shannon. We both knew that wherever we went from here on, we would never be as happy as we were here, that was just a fact.

We sat down on the ground, sorting through some basic things, neither of us so much as uttering a single sentence.

After a while, my phone buzzed. Pulling it out of my pocket, my heart skipped a beat at the message that appeared on my screen: Meet me, you know where -R

Seeing the message, Maddy nudged me, "Go to him," she told me, "I'll cover for you."

My lips parted at her words, tears brimming in my eyes as I pulled her into a hug, "Thank you." I told her gratefully. I'd get to say goodbye to him at least.

I stood up, making my way towards the window and lifting it up just as I had done earlier. That was twice I had snuck out that day and both for practically the same reason.

I sat on the ledge, passing Maddy a quick appreciative smile, before hopping down and sprinting towards the flower field.
