I dropped Dan off at his house, waving to him from the car as he walked in. He waved back before closing the door behind him.
The drive back was silent, sort of lonely. Granted, we didn't have a constructive conversation during the drive, but it was something.
I made it to my apartment after about 10 minutes. Parking on the street, I got out, locked my car and went inside.
Checking my phone, I saw a text from Arin.
"Did you make it home?"
I typed back a quick response.
"Yeah, Dan first, then me."
"Okay, sweet. Thanks for staying with him."
"No worries."
"See ya tomorrow."
I put my phone to charge, and hopped in the shower. I told myself I was going to continue editing when I got out, but after the hot water hit my body, the rest was history.
Getting out and drying off, I managed to halfway brush my teeth. I don't remember putting on my pajamas, or getting into bed. I'm pretty sure I was asleep before my head even hit the pillow, but it didn't last long.
My alarm blared beside my head, jerking me awake. All night, I just tossed and turned, throwing my blankets on and off, rolling onto every position I possibly could, but nothing was comfortable enough. Eventually, I must have passed out, a dreamless sleep taking over for the few remaining hours.
Turning off my alarm, I sat up, rubbing my face. I contemplated calling out today, and getting as much rest as I could. I couldn't do that to them though. They were kind enough to offer me this position when they knew I needed it. The air quickly became humid as the sun rose higher and higher, forcing me to throw my covers off of me and get up. I checked my phone. A text from Dan, hours before I'd woken up. Jesus..
"You coming in today? We're starting at noon."
I replied back a simple "yeah" and tucked my phone in my shorts pocket.
Walking over to my fridge, I opened it and cracked open a Redbull. The bitter flavor shocked my senses, immediately waking me up. I hated them, but they did the job. My phone buzzed in my pocket. Pulling it out, another text from Dan.
"Want coffee? I'm out."
"Oh my God, yes please"
"Be there in 10"
Setting my phone down, I put the Redbull back in the fridge and sat on the couch. Pulling out my laptop, I continued editing from where I left off last night. There wasn't a lot to cut out, but I enjoyed listening to them, so I kept watching, occasionally cutting out a few seconds here and there. I knew it would mess up the timing a little, but I just spliced them together and it worked out fine. Keeping it on in the background, I tried to clean up my apartment a little before he got there.
I suddenly became hyper aware of every speck of dirt. It really shouldn't have mattered to me, but for some reason it did. I had dirty clothes thrown everywhere, dishes that needed to be put away, a few takeout boxes scattered around. He'd understand, he always had, but something needed to be done.
I threw the clothes into my bedroom from the spot I was standing, threw the takeout in the trash, and began putting the mugs in the cabinet. Hearing a knock, I jumped a little.
What was wrong with me today?
"Coming!" I called, before sitting the mug I had in my hand down on the counter. I walked over to the door and opened it.
There he stood, two to-go cups of coffee, one in each hand. A unicorn "destroy everything" teeshirt, faded blue jeans, old worn down tennis shoes, and that hair. That hair I loved so much, more wild than I think I'd ever seen.
"You are a life saver, you have no idea."
He chuckled, handing me a cup. I took it and moved out of the doorway for him to come in.
We both sat down on the couch. I paused the footage, mumbling a sorry.
"No worries. Hey, uh.. I wanted to uh.. talk to you about something."
Taking a sip of coffee, I realized he wanted a response. I nearly drowned myself trying to sip at a faster pace so I could answer, before the silence became awkward, hoping the urgency of me swallowing didn't have the same effect.
"How're you.. doing?"
"Do.. you.. mean today, or in life?"
"I mean like, the whole 'being our editor' thing. How are ya holding up?"
"I'm.. good... why? Am I getting fired? Oh God, I knew this was gonna happen. I-"
He cut me off. "No! No, no, no. You're not getting fired, I promise. I just know how exhausting it can be, and I wanted to make sure you're alright. If you ever need a break, or one of us to take over, let us know."
I smiled, taking another sip. This time, taking my time to swallow the necter of life.
"I appreciate it. I can handle it though."
"Can you really handle two over grown children?"
"If I can handle two grown men, two children shouldn't be an issue. Wait.. that came out so very wrong."
Dan was already laughing, his face scrunched up as he leaned back. Once he regained his composure, he took his first sip of coffee, smacking his lips.
"Not good?"
"Not really, no." He set the cup down.
"Want a redbull? I just opened one."
"Nah. I'm okay."
"So you're just gonna drink gross bean juice, even though you don't want to?"
"Yes, in fact I will. Redbull is horrible for you."
I put my hands up. "Okay, be my guest."
"It's not so bad after you burn all your tastebuds off."
I chuckled, shaking my head. "Be careful, dammit."
"I'm fiiiine."
"No coffee for Arin?" I questioned.
"He made some at home. I let him know I was swinging by here for a bit."
I gave a hum of acknowledgement as I took another sip of coffee.
"He said he texted you last night?" The tone in his voice shifted a little.
"Yeah, yeah he did. He stayed up to make sure you and I made it. He knew I'd be awake, so he texted me."
Standing up to grab my phone, I almost tripped over my shoes on the floor.
I sat back down, a bit flustered, not wanting him to think anything was going on. I pulled up our messages and handed him my phone.
"See?" I said after too long of a silence had fallen.
"Yeah, I see. Don't sweat it. All good." He sat my phone on the table.
I sighed, laying down on the couch, my feet facing him. The same way he fell asleep in the studio.
"Ya know, you'd be a lot more comfortable if you laid over here."
I turned to look at him, and he was gesturing to his crotch. We both laughed.
"I know it looks wrong, I-I just meant like, it's harder to talk over there, and you don't have a pillow-"
"I get it Dan." I quickly interjected.
He was going to say something else, but quickly closed his mouth as I sat up and laid the other way, my head now in his lap.
"I knew what you meant. They call you Danny Sexbang for a reason."
