As the day went on, even though we had coffee, the caffeine wasn't kicking in. It didn't matter though, because the sleepy comfort quickly kicked in. I couldn't help but drift off to sleep. Even though I wanted to enjoy every moment, my eyelids got too heavy, and I was way too comfortable sitting next to Dan.
I jolted awake after what felt like a few hours, realizing my head was on his shoulder.
"Oh my God, I'm so sorry." I wiped my mouth and awkwardly wiped his shirt, embarrassment kicking in, just like the last time it happened.
"It's totally okay, I missed this, to be honest."
I laughed. "You missed my drool? In that case..." I held my hand up to my mouth, pretending to spit on it.
He laughed, joining in on the joke. Pretending to spit on his own hand, he wiped it down my thigh. "There ya go.. nice and wet."
That comment immediately made me flustered, so I covered my face with my hands. "Dude, that came out so wrong. Oh my god."
We both started laughing, eventually trailing off into awkward silence.
Dan was the one to break it after a few minutes. "Nah, in all seriousness, I did miss this. It's no secret I missed you while I was gone. I mean, hell, I wouldn't shut up to Brian about you, the closer it got to the end of tour, he almost became Ninja Brian in real life. It drove him nuts by the very end, I'm sure he's happy to be away from me for a little while."
I couldn't help but smile at him. "You talked about me? What did you talk to him about? Good things, I hope."
"Oh yeah, all the good things. He kinda remembers you from back when you were in your purple haired phase."
"Oh yeah! The beginning of your Game Grumps era. God, that was so long ago.
He smiled. "It was. He remembers one or two conversations you two had, but nothing else. So I told him about the time you brought me soup when I was sick, and then he thought you were one of my ex girlfriends from that one story I told, where the girl brought me soup and then gave me head. I quickly clarified you were not, in fact, that girl."
I chuckled, pushing that thought of him out of my mind. I didn't need that imagery in my head during this cute moment.
"I told him about all the nights you used to stay up late and bring us food during our late night Pokemon sessions. I told him about how you used to help Suzy with her online shop. I told him about the time you got reeeally drunk and butt dialed me while you were crying to your roommate about a girl you almost fought."
I cut him off. "Oh my Goood, I forgot about that. That was so embarrassing. Jeeeeesus, I can't believe you still remember that." I plopped my face into a pillow at the other end of the couch. I could hear him dying laughing.
"I'll never forget that one." He laughed for a while, eventually collecting himself. "Then, I told him about how you just vanished one day."
I sat in silence, looking at my hands in my lap. The silence slowly filled the room. Dan didn't say anything for a long time.
"Being away for a few months has been incredibly, incredibly difficult. I can't imagine how hard it was for you for all those years. I mean, can't believe I was ever mad, because once I put myself in your shoes, it all made sense. You might've missed me, but Ellie..?"
When he didn't continue, I slowly looked up at him.
"I fucking missed you."
"I missed you too." I whispered.
He reached over and put his hand on the side of my face, caressing my cheek with his thumb.
"I promise, I'm never leaving again." I closed my eyes, resting the weight of my head onto his hand.
He pulled me in closer.
For a split second, I thought he was going to kiss me, and my heart jumped into my throat.
But he didn't. He pulled me closer, so that I could lay on his chest. He kept his left hand on my face, his right was wrapped around my back, rubbing my shoulder.
His breathing was slow and calm. His heartbeat was strong and steady. Both of those things were in stark contrast to my own. I was glad he felt so comfortable around me, but if he didn't make a move soon, my heart was going to burst out of my chest.
To be fair, so far, all of his small gestures had been subtle moves, but I hadn't been too sure, so I didn't reciprocate. Maybe I'm actually the oblivious one.
