After a few minutes of silence, Dan loudly sighed. I didn't think much of it until I glanced over at him. His head was rested on the back of the couch, his eyes staring up at the ceiling.
"You okay?"
"I came here to talk to you about something."
I turned to face him, now sitting cross-legged on the couch.
He rolled his head to the side, looking at me.
"Theres no easy way to say this, so I'm just gonna say it. I'm leaving for tour.. tomorrow."
The words slammed into every inch of my body. I felt my heart drop. I knew it. They mentioned it.
I knew it was coming soon, he'd leave.
He'd always leave, but he'd come back.
He'd always come back.
I had to say something. Put on a brave face. Act excited. If I didn't smile, I'd cry.
"Oh.."
"Yeah, and-"
"That's awesome! I'm glad to see you getting back out there. It's been long enough!"
I hoped my words were convincing, but I could hear the hurt in them myself. I just hoped he couldn't. My hands began shaking, so I placed them firmly on my knees.
He looked at me for a while with a blank expression. Neither one of us breaking eye contact. I could feel my eyes glossing over, tears threatening to surface.
"Ellie.." He whispered.
"Yeah?" My voice broke.
"I'll be back."
I smiled, tears in my eyes. "I know. I truly am happy for you. It's gonna be so much fun. All the cool sights you'll see, fans you'll run into along the way. Definitely send me pictures as the tour goes on."
He nodded. "Definitely, buuuut, I figured I'd stop by, spend my last day here."
"That's actually really sweet. Shouldn't you be packing though?"
"Already did that this morning. I couldn't sleep so I got up early."
"Jesus, Dan. It was already early when you stopped by."
He shrugged, looking back up at the ceiling. "What can I say? I'm excited."
"I bet so. I'm gonna wash these, I'll be back."
The end of my sentence was met with more voice cracks, but I cleared my throat as I stood up. Taking the plates and cups into the kitchen, I started washing them.
A few tears escaped my eyes at the same moment I turned the water on. Watching them fall into the sink water made me think about how much I'm going to cry while he's gone. Wiping my eyes with my shirt, I composed myself as quickly as I could, and washed up.
I took a few deep breaths before walking back to my spot on the couch, slowly sitting back down beside him, my elbows resting on my knees.
He wrapped his arm around me, pulling me closer. I leaned on him, closing my eyes.
"Are you okay?" I was scared to know the answer.
"Yeah, I am. Are you?"
I nodded. "I will be."
He rubbed my shoulder a few times.
We sat in silence for a long time, neither one of us really knowing what to say. We both knew it was happening and there was nothing either of us could do. We were just enjoying the time we had left, but we definitely were not on the same page.
