Sorry for the long delay in this upcoming chapter. I had a death in the family, and while my family isn't very close, we all came together to mourn her loss. I had been taking a break from writing way before, because I didn't feel like I had been writing at my full potential. I'd rather give you all my best, rather than meeting a imaginary deadline I set for myself. I should be back though. Thank you for sticking around, I hope you enjoy. ❤️
*******************************Realizing what a nightmare my place looked, I spent the day religiously cleaning.
Vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, washing every dish, doing what felt like 100 loads of clothes, and folding them all. I'm not sure why, but I felt like it should be spotless, even though he never cared how bad it ever got. He understood my struggles, and never judged. I just wanted it to be perfect.
I told myself last year I'd buy a Christmas tree, and the year before that... and the year before that. I just never got around to it, and by now, with only a week left before Christmas, they'd definitely be out.
Before I knew it, it was almost midnight, and I never got a call or text from Dan. Any other time, it would make me upset, but my excitement for his return overshadowed everything. I did decide to shoot him a quick "hey." text, just in case he forgot.
"I'm sure he didn't forget about me, of course he didn't. Why would he?" Realizing I was talking out loud, I shook my head.
Changing into some comfortable clothes, I headed to the bathroom, brushed my teeth, washed my face, and turned off all the lights, except for my lamp beside the bed. I was too tired from cleaning to shower, I told myself I'd do it on the morning.
About 10 minutes into doom scrolling on Facebook, he video called me. I waited a few seconds to answer, not wanting to seem too desperate.
"Hey, Lovebug."
"Hey!" I tried to ignore the redness growing in my cheeks. Thankfully, it was dark enough, he couldn't see. "Thought you forgot about me." I joked.
"I'm sorry, no. I could never forget about you. I can't wait to sleep in my own bed too, my back is killing me."
"Only if I can join you." I didn't realize the words that had come out of my mouth until they had already fallen out. I wanted to throw my phone across the room and crawl into a hole. What just got into me? A short moment of silence fell over the both of us, equally as shocked as the other. Laughing, I went to apologize.
"I'm so sor-"
He spoke over my words, his taking a more serious tone than my joking one. "There's room for two."
My mouth hung open, a tried to find words, but none came to me. All that would come out was a nervous chuckle. He laughed too, switching back to his goofy self. He went on to tell me about his back pain, the uncomfortable tour bus bed, the lumps in the mattress, and how the tiny privacy curtain ended up breaking half way through tour, so he's grateful when they can get a hotel room.
I tried to pay attention. Laughing at the funny moments, being serious when he wasn't smiling, nodding to show I was listening. But the words that man spoke to me, not even 5 minutes ago? I couldn't focus.
After he finished his story, he paused for a minute, expecting a response from me that I never gave.
"S-sorry. I thought there was more to it."
"I mean, I could talk forever, but I want to hear what you've been up to. What's been going on in your world?"
"Nothing much, honestly. Arin hasn't sent me anything new to edit to keep me busy, uhhh.. I told you about the new art stuff.. oh! Everyone's Christmas gifts came, including yours."
"Mine? You got me something?"
I nodded excitedly. "I did! I know, I know, you don't do Christmas, and it's not that I'm trying to insult you or your beliefs, I just love getting people gifts, and I know you'll love it."
"Ellie, you know I don't take offense to that, I think it's really sweet. I'm glad you got something for me because I got something for you, and I know you would've felt bad if you didn't have anything in return. Which you didn't have to, but thank you."
"You got me something? Really?"
"Mhmm, because I'm an adult, with adult money, and I can spend it how I want to. That's the great thing about adult money."
I laughed. "That's fair. It is great. Well, thank you too."
"Ah, don't mention it. It's nothing major."
"Doesn't have to be. It came from you, and that's what counts."
"Awh, stawp it."
We both laughed. "If you want, we can stay on FaceTime, but I'm gonna go to sleep. I speed cleaned my entire apartment today, and I'm exhausted. I know I can't complain, but damn."
"Nah, I totally get it. I'll stay on with you. Thankfully Brian found a last minute hotel opening after I'd give up. Separate rooms from now on."
I laughed, remembering just how loud that man snores.
A natural silence fell over us, my eyes quickly getting heavy. I heard some rustling coming from him, probably getting comfortable for the night. A few more minutes passed by, before I started hearing him quietly humming "Kiss From A Rose". I moved a little, and he immediately stopped. I groaned.
"Nooo, keep humming, please." I mumbled in a groggy tone.
He said nothing, but went back to humming. Once the song was over, he whispered into the phone "Goodnight, Lovebug."
That's the last thing I heard before fully falling asleep.
