Facetime Sleepover

I woke up the next morning, my eyes slowly fluttering open as they adjusted to the sunlight filtering through my curtain.

I looked at my phone, still proped up against the wall, and smiled. He was still on our FaceTime call, sleeping soundly. His eyes were closed, slightly moving back and forth. His mouth was slightly open, a bit of drool pooling inside, spilling out onto a small wet spot on his pillow. It made me laugh, but I was careful not to wake him up. I watched him for a few moments, enjoying how peaceful he looked.

I realized how creepy it would be if he woke up to me staring at him, so I contemplated whether I should act like I'm asleep until he wakes up, or hang up the call. I decided to act like I'm asleep, secretly hoping I'd actually fall back asleep because it felt too early to want to be awake.

Closing my eyes, it didn't take long to drift back off, knowing he was right there. I woke up again, some time later, but he was still asleep. I checked the time, it was past 11. God, he must really be exhausted, no matter how much of a front he puts up. He's caring, passionate, determined, dedicated. Everything anyone could say about an amazing person, I could say about the man I grew to love, the man I was watching sleeping. My heart hurt for him, but I kept our conversations in the back of my head, staying strong for the both of us.

"I love you." The words slipped out of my mouth before I could catch them, before I registered what I said, and I was desperate to shove them back in. It was almost subconscious, my mouth taking over before my brain could bring my words to a halt... but he didn't react. He stayed sound asleep, unaware I had just told him the 3 words I truly meant.

I let out a shakey breath that I didn't realize I'd been holding, and closed my eyes once again. Saying it to Dan, even though he was asleep, made it easier to process, easier to get off my chest when the time comes, and made it overall easier to talk to him. I knew it wasn't the right time for him to hear, being so far apart, and still having what felt like forever left of his tour, I couldn't do that to him.

I hapily drifted in and out of sleep, feeling accomplished and satisfied for now. It wasn't until I heard rustling on the other end that I was fully awake. I figured he'd sat up in bed. I kept my eyes closed, hoping he'd think I was still sleeping.

I heard a soft "Awwwe" come from him, almost a whisper, before he laid back down again. Waiting a few seconds, I counted them in my head before slowly opening my eyes.

"Morning, Ellie."

I smiled. "Good morning."

"Did I wake you up?" The concern in his voice was so sweet.

"Nah, I've been in and out for a while. I just thought it would be rude to hang up."

"You're all good. I have exactly.. zero plans for today, honestly. I needed this break. It's only for a day, but I'm gonna enjoy every moment."

"I don't blame you. I can end the call and let you enjoy the day if you'd like."

"No!" He paused, trying to play off how intensely he yelled. "I.. I mean. If you want to, it's cool, no big deal." He laughed, his face turning bright red.

I smiled, chuckling. "So smooth."

"What about you? Any plans?"

"Nah, not unless Arin sends me something else to edit. I did just edit the one where you talked about spending the day with me though." I raised my eyebrows up and down a few times.

"He sent you that one? Oh gooood."

"What's wrong?" I laughed.

"That's so embarrassing. I feel like I should have asked you before talking about it, but I didn't, and I sorry. I-"

I cut him off. "Dan, you do realize whether I edit it or not, I'm gonna watch it when it's released, right? I watch every video."

"That's true. The only reason I didn't ask you beforehand was because it was a surprise."

"It's totally fine, I really don't mind."

"Okay, okay."

A long silence swept over both of us, and I caught myself staring at him way too hard. I smiled. "If I thought your hair was crazy on the daily, your bed head is even worse."

"Oh yeah, there's no taming the Jew fro. I've just accepted it."

I laughed. "It's just it's own entity at this point."

"For sure."

I rolled over onto my other side, taking the phone with me.

"Weee, I'm going on an adventure." He commented excitedly.

"Just to the other side of my bed." I mumbled as I re positioned myself into the cameras view. I realized how that sounded, but decided not to make a joke.

"You can't give me an invitation like that, I'm too far away."

I laughed nervously, trying to play it off. "Not like that, Jesus Christ Dan."

He laughed it off too. I guess he realized his attempt at flirting wasn't working. It was killing me inside though. Eventually one of those comments was going to get to me, and I know I'm just gonna tell him everything.
