Family Night

We kept talking and laughing, and as the night went on, I got progressively drunk. Not to the point where I couldn't walk, but everything felt woozy. I didn't worry too much though, I knew I was in good hands. They had already told me I wasn't driving home after the first drink, so we honestly just had a fun night. Arin had 1 drink, and Suzy had almost caught up to me. She could handle her alcohol a lot better, but her face was very red.

She had left the room, probably to try to get me to bed soon.

A question popped into my head, a bit jumbled, but I got there in the end.

"Hey.. Arin."

"Hmm. What's up El? You okay?"

"Yeah, yeah, I'm good. I got this thing for Dan.. for Christmas. D'you think he'll like it?"

"Well, you gotta show it to me." He said in a sarcastic tone.

"Oh, right." I pulled out my phone, and went to the page.

"Dinosaur light." I stated, as if he couldn't see the screen.

"Yeah! He'll love it! Probably will put it in the office, honestly."

"Really? Sweeeet."

"That's really sweet of you to get him something."

"I got Suzy something too, and you."

"For real?"

"Yeah! Of course! You guys have been so nice to me, and I know Dan doesn't do Christmas, but I figured, why the hell not."

I threw my hands up, dropping them on the table. He offered me another cookie, but I declined.

"I think I've had about 8 or 9. I'm good man. I really don't wanna puke cookie chunks in the morning."

"Ellie.." He leaned over, resting his arms to support himself. He took on a serious tone.

I looked over at him, curious.

"Real talk."

I nodded, sitting up straight, really focusing on what he was going to say.

"Are you.. okay?"

The words took a few seconds to process, but I knew exactly what he meant. In that moment, I sobered up real fast. I hadn't really stopped to think about it in a long time.

"I haven't really thought about it since.. since he left. I try not to. I mean, on one hand.. I'm still a little hurt, but on the other hand, I-I understand. I know he has a job, a-and his job is also his passion, and he changes so many lives, probably more than he even realizes, but I miss him so fucking much, every day. So, I-I distract myself. Try not to let my feelings get in the way, ya know, but overall, yeah.. yeah, yeah, I'm okay."

I smiled at the end of my pointless rant, and for the first time, I believed it.

Arin nodded.

"We're glad." Apparently, Suzy had walked back in the room. "We brought you over to ask you that, actually. To spend some time with us, so you weren't constantly alone. You know you can come over any time you want."

"I know. Thank you."

Arin leaned back up, resting his back on the chair. "How about we order some pizza, take this party to the living room, and have a movie night? It's only about 8:00."

"That sounds great!" I exclaimed.

"I'm gonna top off our drinks, get us some blankets. Would you be a dear and order for us?"

Arin smiled a goofy smile. "Can do."

"While you guys do that, I'm gonna give Dan a call."

"Think that's a good idea?" Arin warned.

I thought about it for a minute. "I'd better just shoot a text."

"Just checking in on ya"

I stared at the screen, waiting for a response. He was probably performing right now actually. Realizing how stupid that was, I sighed and put my phone away. Suzy put her hand on my back as she sat my cup down.

"Thanks."

"No response?"

"Nah, he's probably on stage, or about to be."

"True."

I took a sip of my drink and walked to the living room to join Arin. Suzy followed behind. The lights were off in there. The only light pouring in was from the kitchen. A rectangular beam illuminating just enough space into the area so that no one would trip in the darkness, but still dark enough that my eyes took a while to adjust.

Suzy sat down on the far left of the couch, Arin beside her. I sat down beside Arin, keeping enough distance that it wasn't uncomfortable for him.

Suzy turned the TV on and started scrolling through movies on Netflix.

Arin spoke up. "I got 2 pepperoni and a cheese."

"Sounds good. I don't know how much longer I'll be awake." Suzy lazily mumbled.

"Come on! It's not even late yet! Food'll be here in like 20 minutes."

"Hmmm."

I chuckled, whispering to Arin. "She's falling asleep while she's scrolling. Look."

He nudged her slightly. "Babe. Want me to pick the movie?"

"Hmm? What? Yeah, sure."

She handed him the remote, and he started scrolling. He picked something random, I think it was a comedy of some sort.

A few minutes in, Arin got a notification on his phone. "Pizza's here. Be right back."

He got up, and answered the door. I didn't hear him say anything, but he came back with the boxes, and sat them on the counter. I got up, pausing the movie. He got out two plates from the cabinet, and we got our pizza.

"She's fully asleep at this point, huh?" I asked, looking over.

"Oh yeah, knocked out."

I laughed, finishing off my last drink of the night, throwing the cup away.

I asked where the bathroom was, Arin pointing to the hallway. "Second door on the right."

I walked down the hall, turning on the bathroom light as I entered. Turning to close the door, I tried to close it as quiet as possible, for some reason. I used the bathroom, washed my hands, and walked back out, turning off the light.

I sat back down on the couch and started eating. Arin turned the movie back on, and we were laughing at what was happening on screen.

It was a pretty good movie, it helped take my mind off everything for a bit. Suzy woke up about half way through, our laughing probably waking her up.

After the movie was over, Suzy let Arin know she was going to head to bed. I said goodnight to her, and she made her way to their room.

"Aren't you gonna join her?" I asked, surprised he didn't get up.

"I will in a little while. I'm not tired yet though, I've got a few emails I've still gotta reply to, actually. Fuck."

I chuckled. "That sucks."

"Eh, it's whatever. I don't mind, they just never stop coming."

"That's what she said."

"Oh god." He laughed, getting up to stretch, and making his way back to the kitchen. He sat back in the same seat he was in when I got there earlier. I knew he had an office, I'm not sure why he stayed there.

"Feel free to start another movie. I'll get you some blankets in a few minutes."

"Alrighty."

I scrolled through for a while, but nothing really caught my eye, until I spotted a Gabriel Iglesias special I hadn't seen yet.

I tried to watch it, but shortly after, my eyes started to get heavy, and before I knew it, I was asleep.
