I suddenly jolted awake. My phone was buzzing in my pocket.
Checking who it was, it was Dan.
"Hello?"
"Hey! I'm surprised you answered!"
"Why? What time is it?"
"It's like.. 3 or 4 in the morning."
"Jesus.. Dan, what the hell are you doing still up?" My tone was harsher then I meant it to be. I must have still been a little tipsy.
"It's just been a late night, incredibly crazy. Couldn't miss our call though." He didn't seem offended by my tone, if anything, he was trying to calm me down with his own tone shift.
He continued when I didn't say anything. "Some nights.. if a show didn't go as planned, or if something bad happened.. calling you is the only thing I look forward to by the end of the night.. I don't know, it might be stupid but-"
I cut him off. "No, no, no, Dan. That's so sweet." I could feel myself tearing up.
I could almost hear him smiling through the phone. "Don't get me wrong, each night is incredible, no matter what happens. It's just.. it gets exhausting. I miss everyone."
"I can imagine. We miss you too! I.. miss you too."
"I'll be back soon. I'll be back before you know it."
"I know, I know. I just.." I sighed.
"What is it?"
"I wish things had ended a little better. Maybe a little different. I was a Debbie Downer the whole time, and I didn't mean to be. I just.. didn't really know how to react."
"I completely understand. It's not easy. I'll make it up to you when I get back. I promise."
"There's no need for that, you have nothing to make up."
"Nope, too late. Don't fight me on this."
I chuckled. "Fine, but all I need is a hug, that'd be plenty."
"I'm gonna hug you so hard, you're not gonna know what hit ya."
I laughed. "Thanks Dan. Now, get some sleep, I know you're exhausted."
"I've already ate, and showered, and brushed my teeth. I'm in bed now. Tell me about your day."
Oh no.
"Well, I'm actually at Arin and Suzy's house."
"This late? Why? What happened?" I could hear the concern rising in his voice.
"Everything's good, we're all good. They asked me to pick up some cookie dough today, ran into not only a Lovely, but also an NSP fan. He was really awesome. So I came over, we baked cookies, had some drinks, ordered pizza, I admittedly got drunk." I said that last part out of the corner of my mouth, a little embarrassed and ashamed, but honest. "Later I passed out. It was honestly such a fun day. A little emotional, I get that way when I drink." I chuckled. "Overall, good day. Finally got to get out the house again."
"That sounds like it was fun! I just hope you don't have a hangover tomorrow."
"Nah, I should be good. I feel fine now, just incredibly tired." I yawned, but tried to keep it silent. I didn't want our phone call to end, but I knew it had to soon.
"Awwe. Well, I'll let you get back to sleep, I'm about to crash too."
"Okay. Hey.. Dan?"
"Yeah? What's up?"
"Nevermind."
"No, what? Tell me. I hate when people do that."
I sighed, a twinge of sadness crept up on me. "I don't want to lose you."
I heard rustling on the other end. He was probably sitting up in bed.
"Ellie, what do you mean? You're not gonna lose me. I'm coming back." He sounded hurt, but that wasn't my intention.
"I-I know, I know. I'm sorry. I just mean like.. I don't know."
"Listen, I know as well as anybody, this is fucking hard. Me being gone can't be easy on you, because everyone knows how great I am." He laughed. "You not gonna lose me. I'm gonna be back in less than 2 months. You're stuck with me, whether you like it or not. If all of this is about you leaving back then, don't stress about that. You've found your family now, and we will make sure you feel loved and appreciated, because you are. You're home, and after this tour, I will be too."
"You promise?"
"I promise."
"Okay. Thank you."
"I'm staying on the phone with you tonight. I don't want you feeling alone. Ever again."
"Dan, you don't have-"
"I know. I know." The first one was harsh, the second one came out softer. "I want to."
"Well, do you have any stories from tour that you can tell me? Your voice puts me to sleep."
"Ouch."
"Not like that! I just meant.. whenever I couldn't sleep, I used to put Game Grumps stories on, and it always worked. Knocked out, every time."
"I knew what you meant. Uhh.. yeah, yeah. I've got a story. This was just the other night, Brian and I were getting ready, and we got word that there was a technical issue with our lighting, or something, but they told us it would be fixed in time for the show. Well, apparently they just put a bandaid on it, and hoped it survived the whole way through. It did not. Not even half way through, all of our lights start going off at random times, not hitting cues, going out completely. We tried to make a joke out of it, to brush it off, but the crowd could tell it wasn't intentional. After blowing our cover, we asked if there was a fix, but they never did get it fixed. Then there was a story about the beginning of our tour. Brian thought it would be so funny to tape a sign to the back of my cape that says "I heart MILFS", and it stayed on for the entire show, never fell off. Worst part was the fact that a mom and her daughter were in the front row, and I had my back turned to the crowd so many times that..."
His story began to trail off in my ears, before slowly fading out completely. I drifted off, being swept away by his voice to a temporary dreamland, where each passing night I was welcomed back to. Finally able to forget he wasn't beside me, each and every night.
