We spent the rest of the day on FaceTime.
My food came, and he eventually got up from his comfy cocoon when Brian came back with their food. He leaned the phone against the wall, and they both pulled up chairs to talk to me while we ate. It was nice.
Brian and I caught up. Not wanting to trauma dump on him, I kept it brief, but filled him in on the basics. I knew he and his wife had a daughter a while back, so I finally got the chance to congratulate him, years later. His eyes lit up as he gushed about her sense of humor, her love for music at such a young age, how smart she is, how someone can finally appreciate his dad jokes. It made me so happy to see him fulfilled in yet another aspect of his life. I smiled the whole time he was talking, adding little comments or questions here and there, but mostly letting him talk.
Dan wasn't watching Brian as he was talking though. He was watching me.
A slight smile was on his face as he looked at me. I tried not to make it obvious that him looking at me like that made me very self aware. It made me nervous because I wonder how many times he's stared at me for long periods of time without me noticing. I felt butterflies in my stomach, my heart rate increasing as I tried to focus on Brian's story. Then he hit me with a question that slammed me back into realities ground.
"Do you want kids at some point?"
I almost yelled my answer. "No!" Glancing at Dan, who was taking a bite of food, I cleared my throat. "Nah, I don't. I don't mind kids, they can be absolutely wonderful, but I've never really wanted any of my own."
He nodded. "I see. That's fine."
I nodded, an awkward silence filled both sides of the screen.
"I've gotta take a massive wizz." Dan finally spoke up after a while. He got up and left.
"So..."
I looked at Brian. "Yeah?"
"Excited for Dan coming back?"
My eyes immediately started watering. "God yes. I miss him so much. It's been so hard Brian." My voice broke.
His voice became hushed, leaning a bit closer. "You really love him, don't you?"
I nodded, wiping my eyes. "I really do. So much, that it almost hurts. He still has no idea."
"Don't let his golden retriever energy fool you. I have a sneaking suspicion he knows."
"Seriously?"
"Oh yeah. Definitely. He can't not know."
"He just seems so oblivious. I mean, sometimes he'll make flirty remarks, but that's just his personality. I mean.. God, this makes it so much more difficult. Why hasn't he said anything?"
"I can't really answer that one, but he still talks about you, all the time. Maybe he's waiting until he's back. It'd be kind of stupid to profess his love through a phone screen. It would also be kind of hard to make out too."
I laughed so hard, a snort escaped. "Oh God, Brian! No!"
He shrugged. "It's true."
"I just want to hug him. So tight, and never let go, ya know? He's just so-"
Brian cut me off. "Oh I know right? Definitely. Especially when she's all sleepy. Those puppies dog eyes can let her get away with anything."
Dan walked back into view. As he was sitting back down, I mouthed a thank you to Brian.
He nodded quickly.
Dan spoke up. "I'm open to having kids one day. It's not something I necessarily have a desire for at the moment, but who knows? Maybe someday. Not exactly ready to give up all my freedoms just yet. It's hard enough being away from the people I love that I didn't help create, I can't imagine leaving a literal part of me behind when I'm one tour. I don't know how you do it dude."
"Eh, you get used to it. She's got her mom, regular FaceTime calls, and it's not like we're on tour 365 days a year. You have a lot more going on than I do."
"That's true." I spoke up. "You almost never catch a break. Trying to juggle that much stuff must be hard. Recording Game Grumps episodes, The Grumps episodes, touring with NSP, Starbomb, Shadow Academy, writing music, recording music, that's so much. I have a lot of respect for that."
"I appreciate it. Yeah, ya know.. I almost never step back and really think about how much I actually do. I've just always gotta be doing something. Which is ironic because I'm really lazy. At least I think I am. I mean, shit, I've been in bed all day."
"Dude, you deserve it!" Brian exclaimed. "We both do, honestly."
I nodded. "100% agree. Getting burnt out is a no-go. Never fun. When I first started working for Arin, it hit me like a freight train, I can't even lie but.." Dan nodded. "Once some people came back, I haven't had as much work. I was able to adjust pretty quickly, but it was definitely a struggle. Falling asleep at work, I was scared I was gonna get fired."
Dan and I laughed.
"All that to say, when you two get back, fucking relax. Dan, come over like you promised, I'll give you all the hugs, order us some food, put a movie on, and couch potato." He nodded vigorously, his hair shaking. "Brian, give your daughter all the hugs, give your wife all the kisses, put your feet up, and relax. Understood?"
Dan nodded again. Brian responded. "That's the plan."
