I got some crab Rangoons and a few spring rolls off the app, and sat his phone back down. A few seconds later he returned, sitting back down beside me. He silently placed his order as well, locking his phone and putting it in his pocket.
"After dinner, do you think you'll feel up to a late movie?"
"Maybe. I'll see. More than likely though."
"Okay. No worries if not."
"I appreciate the thought, I really do, but.. if we're just friends, I don't care what we do. As long as we spend the day together, it doesn't matter to me."
I shot the "friends" word back at him a second time, and for the second time, he had a blank expression.
"How long are you gonna be.. gone?"
He sighed. "3 months."
"Oh. I don't know how long they usually last."
"That's standard for me usually. Pretty long tour."
"Gotcha. Any sights you're excited to see?"
"Yeah! Definitely hitting up all the major museums, checking out the different dinosaurs. There's this huge Stegosaurus I cannot wait to take photos of. My goal is to visit as many museums as I can and document all the dinosaurs I see."
"That's awesome. Going on tour definitely helps with that. I've seen your posts about them."
"So fucking awesome dude. I can't wait."
"I can't wait to see all the pictures too! I've only ever seen one, it was a pterodactyl they had strung up and hanging from the ceiling. I saw it when I was like 6 or 7. Scared the hell out of me. It would slightly sway every so often and I thought it was going to snap off the suspension cords and crush everyone."
"That's dark as hell for a 6 year old."
"Yeah, you're telling me."
The conversation came to a natural end there. I picked at a random spot on the couch, not really knowing what else to say. The room began to feel tense, like a string on a guitar that was tuned too tight was about to snap.
Dan slowly leaned over the side of the couch and picked up a pillow, placing it in his lap. He gently pulled me towards him. I laid on my back, my head in his lap.
Whether we were just friends or not, I was enjoying this. He was looking down at me, me looking up at him. No smile, no anger, no sadness on either of our faces. Just looking.
The sun was starting to set, casting a warm glow over the whole room. His brown mane, now golden by the sun's rays. That same mane shadowing his once pronounced features.
He brushed a piece of hair out of my face. It felt like something out of a movie. I watched his hand as he moved it out of my line of sight, tucking it behind my ear. He quickly pulled his hand away.
"S-sorry, I just.. yeah."
"It's okay." I whispered in return.
He returned his hand to my hair, gently stroking it as he leaned back.
He suddenly spoke up. "Food should be here any minute."
I nodded, the pillow scrunching up under my head. At some point, I must have dozed off, because I realized my eyes were closed. Not knowing how long I'd dozed off, it only felt like seconds had passed.
I stayed awake with my eyes closed as I waited, until I heard a knock at the door a few moments later.
Sitting up, Dan got to the door before I could and answered it.
