Chapter 16

I sighed as I came out of my bedroom. I chose a long, floor-length flowing white dress with aqua polka-dots on it, matched up with aqua flats. Mum insisted I wear one of her safe-height heels, but I declined, because I preferred flats over heels any day.

The reason why I sighed was because we were about to attend a dinner party. Mum was pretty popular with her friends, and she would usually bring the whole family over. I don't mind, since there would be foods, but the dressing up bit was meh.

Arine came out of her room wearing a black, knee-length dress with a pink ribbon around her waist-line. A pink headband was on her hair and she wore black flats with it. We both looked the opposite, just like our personalities. She sat down on her study chair and grabbed a novel from the table, resuming her reading. That was one thing we had in common.

"Did you wear powder?" I asked.

"Did you?" She shot back.

I wrinkled my face, "Why bother asking me that question?"

She sighed, "Yes, yes I did. Is that mascara you're wearing?"

I blushed and looked down, "I'm not wearing powder, so..."

"Girls, you ready?" Mum shouted. I grabbed my aqua purse and replied, "Yeah!"

"Give me a minute." Arine grumbled and placed a bookmark on the page. She hurried down to the living room and joined mum and I.

"Where's dad?" I asked.

"We'll pick him up from the train station and go straight to my friend's. Did you lock the doors and windows?" She replied.

I nodded and recounted how many windows and doors I've done. Yep, all of them.

"Front seaat!" Arine yelled and ran towards the car. I rolled my eyes and activated the alarm. I closed the door behind me and made sure it was proper. Mum started the car as I hopped onto the back seat. Arine turned on the radio and the speaker blasted Dear Future Husband.

I stood nearby a corner, holding a plastic cup filled with Pepsi and casually sipping some liquid. My sister met some of her friends and she was ushered towards another room, probably playing some social games while my parents were chatting with their friends on the other side of the backyard.

I started walking towards the dessert area and filled my empty plate with savouries and sweets. Scones, cupcakes, cookies, curry puffs, I took them all! I quickly went back to my corner and stuffed myself with food.

I didn't hear the scraping of a chair and someone's presence nearby. I faced to the right and met a girl around my age. Straight, bob cut brown hair with foresty green eyes, and she was wearing a peach one-piece.

"You seem bored." She stated. I coughed out some bits of scone, pretty embarrassed that she caught me eating like a pig and wiped the corners of my mouth with a serviette.

"No, not really." I replied. I was indeed having much fun tasting the different sweets they served here. She chuckled and nudged me towards the inside of the house.

"Want to come inside? There's some boys playing some games." She rolled her eyes.

"What games?" I asked.

"I don't know, I don't care. Want to come?"

"Hold on, let me finish my scone." I replied.

She nodded and took out her iPhone, while I tried to slow down on my eating. Luckily, she didn't saw me taking a plateful of food or else she would judge me nonetheless.
