"Excuse me, Miss Michaelson." One of the director's assistants called from behind me. I cringed inwardly at the formality –I could never get used to it.
I hiked my bag, smiled and turned around to look at her.
"Yes, how may I help you?"
"Could you please get Ian on standby, his scene is up next." She said, before giving instructions through some kind of walkie-talkie.
"Yeah, sure," I answered.
"Thanks." She turned on her heel towards another actor's van. "I'll see you at the set."
I nodded, making a noncommittal sound and began my journey towards the dressing room where he currently was after the early morning shootings.
Yeah, you heard right. The day had finally come upon us and here we were on the set of After Love. The first script reading happened about a month ago for which I was absent because of a wedding and the second one happened two weeks ago. I was enthusiastic about attending the table read but it seemed that fate had other plans for me and again I found myself not going for it all because of menstrual cramps.
Flashback to two weeks ago.
"Hey, Kiara." Ian called, walking into the living room from his room. "Have you seen my glasses? I can't seem to find them."
"Yeah, I did see it." I muttered without raising my head to look at him. I was trying to concentrate and finish up his schedule arrangement so I could join them for the second script reading but it seems my body wasn't having it –the dull but increasing pain I was feeling in my lower abdomen was distracting and low-key annoying. It couldn't have chosen a better day to come upon me.
"It was on the recliner the last I checked." I clenched my teeth from the pain.
"It isn't there, right now." He wandered around the room in search of the eyeglasses. "I wonder where it is though." He murmured.
"Do you need them today?"
I raised my head to see him standing by the glass wall, his arms folded on his chest and his brows furrowed in thought.
"Mhm?" he blinked upon realising that I asked a question. "Sorry, I zoned out. Did you say something?"
I let out a steady breath, hoping to release some tension. The pain was becoming worse and I wasn't comfortable.
"I asked if you needed the glasses for today's read-through."
"Not exactly," he answered and began his walk towards me. "I need to know where they are."
I gave a nod, too pained to give a reply while squirming subtly in my seat.
Of all days to have menstrual cramps, it had to be today and in front of him. I thought inwardly.
It was the day of the final script reading and having missed the first one to attend a wedding with my dad, I had hoped to go for the second one and experience it first hand. Hence, the reason I resumed work early to finish my tasks for the day only for cramps to get the better of me.
The result of too much sweets. Inner Kiara remarked.
And sadly, I don't have any painkillers to help. I sighed.
"Kiara, are you okay?" Ian asked, sitting across from me while waiting for Adrian.
"Me?" I pointed to myself and forced a smile while putting away my work tab. "I'm fine."
