Movie Night

Then

James

I slip away from the great hall to sneak up to the astronomy tower early. My plan is to set up everything before Regulus goes up there. A surprise date sounds like a good idea.

It has to be perfect. Merlin, it's his first date ever.

Why hasn't anyone taken this beautiful boy on a date yet? I guess it's better for me though. I'll make sure it's the best date, a really happy memory for him.

I found an spare bed sheet in our dorm that I use to put on one of the walls. Remus lent me this old projector that he said should play the movie on the screen. I think it's pretty cool. I've never seen anything like it. I was just going to use magic.

I put some candles all around the room, and then light them with magic. I also grabbed some snacks earlier from the kitchen. I threw some blankets on the ground with some pillows for us to lay on. It all looks very cosy.

After I'm done setting everything up, I send Regulus a discrete owl that tells him where to meet me and when.

Meet me in our place as soon as you can.

I was a ball of nerves the entire wait for him to get here. I don't know what he'll think of this. Maybe it's too much. What if he doesn't even like movies?

It's too late for me to change anything now. It's almost the time for him to get here.

I sit down by the edge of the tower and watch outside the school while I wait for Reg. Passing time to calm my nerves.

Regulus
I went back to my dorm later and Barty was sitting on his bed, holding a note in the air and smirking at me. I go to walk by him to my own bed but he makes a disapproving noise so I stop.

"What do you need? I have to go change because I have plans-"

"Yeah, I know you do." Barty says, still smirking at me and holding that damn piece of paper.

"What do you mean you know?"

He holds out his hand with the piece of paper in it and motions for me to take it. I reach over and take it, and apparently he's excited for me to read it because now he's smiling and sitting back on his bed.

I open the piece of paper and read the note.

That's why he's smirking like that- it's from James and he knows it.

Meet me in our place as soon as you can.

Our place.

I smile to myself and then remember that Barty's still watching me. I look over at him and hate myself for doing it immediately because he's smirking.

"Fuck off," I say to him as I go to my bed and put the note in my bedside table.

"You're saving the note too?" Barty asks me as he begins cackling and clapping his hands together. "Ohhhh, you're literally so in love with him Reg, and it's hilarious."

"Shut your mouth, Barty. I don't need everyone knowing about this." I say to him.

"Hurry up and go meet your boyfriend, Reg. He's waiting for you." Barty says teasingly.

I flip him off as I start heading towards the door of the dorm room.

"I'm going, now shut up." I say to him on my way out the door.

"Have fun," he says to me right before I close the door and I smile to myself again. Only this time, Barty can't see me smile.

I wonder what James has planned that he had to send me a note. Normally he would just wait for me to show up in the tower.

Something must be different this time.

I head right to the tower and luckily make it there without anyone stopping me. Normally I don't have that trouble but every once in a while I'll run into Sirius or Snape or even Lucius and have to make up some excuse as to why I have to go. Either that or I have to endure whatever torment they throw at me until they decide I can go and then I wait for them to be out of my sight before going towards the tower.

With Lucius, it's usually threats and updates on family shit. Snape is more... more of a bully. He makes mean jokes and cruel comments, and sometimes even gets physical. With Sirius, I don't take it too personal. He usually just wants to talk but then we end up fighting. Or he's mad and he's taking it out on me because I'm safe to him. Someone who deserves it in his opinion.

I head up the stairs and walk into the room without a second thought, only to see James standing there with... oh Merlin. He actually set up a date for us.

I walk in the room some more, trying to keep my facial expressions under control.

"Hey, Reg." James says quietly as he crosses the room. He reaches out to me but hesitated, as if he's asking if it's okay. I nod my head and he pulls me close to him and kisses my forehead while he holds me.

"I figured we could do a movie night," James whispers in my ear.

"That's a good idea," I reply. I'm thankful he can't see my face because I probably have this dumb look plastered on it. No one has ever done anything this nice for me... probably ever.

"There's blankets for us to sit on, the candles are already lit because it took forever, there's a stack of movies over there that Remus found for us to use, and I stole some snacks from the kitchens."

Remus? Remus chose the movies? How- does he know about us?

Calm down... James wouldn't tell him. He wouldn't do that. He knows that no one can know.

You know he told them he's seeing someone, just not who it is. They're close friends. Of course he told them he's seeing someone.

I take a deep breathe and smile. "This is perfect, James."

He smiles and releases a breathe. I didn't even realize he was holding his breathe. "I'm so glad you like it, love."

"So what movies are we watching?" I ask him.

We check out the movies and when we finally decide on one, the next problem is we have to figure out how to make it work.

Muggle shit. So complicated.

Once it's finally all figured out, we sit down on the blankets he has out for us, and he pulls me close to him. I lay my head on his shoulder and take his hand. James pulls a blanket over us and we start the first movie.

I've never felt so... happy. Not in years. This date has been perfect. It's like James knew exactly what I'd like and brought it to life.

I would never admit this to anyone, but I have seen a lot of muggle romance movies and read a lot of romance books and I sort of fell in love with the idea of it all. With James, it's a little different from the movies and books. It's real. There's real emotions involved which makes it scarier. Still fun and incredible but also terrifying.

"Thank you for going to all this effort for this, it's perfect." I say to him.

"I'll do anything for you, Reg. No matter the effort. You're worth it." He replies and leaves a kiss on the top of my head.

For you, James, I'd do anything. I hope you know that too.

I think maybe... James might be my person. My soulmate.
