You tried to not wake your mom as you silently turned the nob before shutting the front door. As you spun around there she was in her full glory standing at the top of the stairs with her arms crossed over her purple robe. From the dark bags under her eyes you could tell she had not fallen asleep yet.
You stared up at her with a cheeky grin. "H-hey mom", your eyes darted around trying to avoid her gaze as you wobbled from side to side trying to hold your balance.
"Sage Aurora Ellis. What in God's name are you doing?" Her voice bellowed down the stairs furious at you. And you knew she was furious because she added your dad's last name to the end.
"Aurora.", you glared back at her.
She let out a long sigh and trudged down the stairs as you stood by the door debating on running outside.
"You know your friends have been calling? Chrissy was almost in tears saying she couldn't find you". Your mom's voice shook. "I was about to send out a damn search party".
She crashed into you as you almost lost your balance. You stood there confused at her response and wondering if you should hug her back.
You muffled "She did?", into her robe as she held on. Your mom let go and eyed you up and down staring at your drunken face.
"She called about 5 times saying she couldn't find you". Her face fell as she eyed your hair. "Why do you reek of alcohol and why do you have twigs in your hair?" She picked some sticks out and flung them to the ground.
"You should see my knees", you mumbled to yourself.
"What?" She asked not fully hearing you. Your heart fluttered as you realized you just said that out loud.
"I- umm. Went to a party aaand it didn't go well soo, I left...". Your voice slurring and trailing off not wanting to go into too many details.
Your mom knew what happened all those months ago and was the first one to support you when even your best friends were skeptical. But lately she was very observant of your 'new' behaviors and quite frankly, drinking problem.
"Sweetheart come here", she pulled you in for another hug as if she was scared to lose you again.
All those months you locked yourself in your room shutting out everyone hoping everything would go away if you could just make the world silent. You fell into a depression that made her terrified for your life. Everyday last year and over the summer you would come home and go straight to your room. Some days not eating or setting foot outside your bedroom. The only thing that kept you going was cheer practice, and even then you almost got kicked off the squad due to absences until the school shrink told your coach what was going on.
"I'm ok really. I just want to go to bed", you choked out a calm voice hoping the embrace from your mom - that you oh so needed- was not going to send you back into crying fits.
