You always figured some friendships are relationships you'll have for the rest of your life, but unless you're very, very lucky, those usually aren't the norm. Most often, friendship looks like something messier: People will float in and out of your life as you change, or they change, or circumstances change. There are moves. There are falling-outs. Schedules get busy. And you begin to shed a lot of the friends you made in your earlier years. You figured in most cases, that doesn't mean you've banished those people from your life forever; it just means you've gone in different directions. Although, if you're lucky, maybe someday you'll find your way back.
You and Eddie had been reviving your friendship over the past few weeks and you were surprised at how easy it was to pick up where you had left off all those years ago. You figured you'd have to start things from scratch but you two eased right into it seemingly without issues. You figured people can often be blinded by their desire to make things work, whether out of loneliness or excitement over having an old friend back in their life, but your optimism was met by his equally. You and him hung out almost every day after school like old times, and on the weekends you saw him when he was not practicing with his band, or you hanging with Chrissy. Whether that be at his house, hiding at Lovers Lake or at the picnic table in the woods you two found secluded places to be. But you enjoyed going to his house the most, as that setting brought back familiar memories from when you were younger, and you could tell Wayne was pleased to see Eddie happy- although neither would ever admit it. You had also informed Chrissy of your almost-daily outings and although she was slightly concerned with being replaced by this new-found friendship you had, she saw a happier side of you and was relieved she did not have to worry about you anymore.
Although no one else knew you were hanging with Eddie, you figured his friends were aware. Sometimes Jeff would smile at you or ask you questions in class he would not normally do. Gareth on the other hand didn't really pay you any mind. And as for Eddie, you two would share passing glances in the hallways or secret head nods as you exited the cafeteria. You managed to keep your hidden friendship a secret for the most part, so things had been fairly easy for you at school.
It was outside of school where things got a little complicated. A couple weeks back you were driving to Eddie's house and saw your dad's car leaving the trailer park. That caused you to spiral and Eddie saw first hand how bad you could get. The next day you woke up in his bed with miscellaneous bruises all over your legs and he said he had been up all night making sure you were okay- although you didn't know if he was exaggerating with the time frame. But that was the first time you came clean to him about your drinking. You couldn't hide it anymore, but part of you wished you had, because since then he has watched you like a hawk. Usually he would refuse to supply you with beers, but after the constant pestering and arguments about how you can 'have a couple' without being belligerent, he would give in just to shut you up. Although he had every right to monitor you. If he didn't then it would most likely end in him driving you home because you got too drunk. Those were the nights when your mom didn't appreciate him very much, but she also couldn't get mad that he'd help carry you into the house and drive you home.
