The high pitched trilling of the house phone was enough to awaken even the deepest of sleepers. After the fourth or fifth ring the bedroom door slowly crept open and sock-covered feet dragged down the hallway, still half asleep. Hopefully the phone would stop by the time those feet got to their destination, but unfortunately, whoever was on the other line really wanted to have a conversation.

"Mhmm?" A hoarse morning voice greeted the caller in a not so welcoming tone.

The person on the other line chuckled. "Glad you're up".

"All bright eyed and bushy tailed".

It may be 7:00 AM, but at least sarcasm was awake and ready for the day.

The caller didn't seem too amused as they let out a long breath before proceeding with their typical morning interrogation.

"You getting ready for school? It's almost time to leave".

"I sure am. What a joyous morning".

The yawn that was expelled shortly after did not exactly help their argument.

"Get your stuff together and get your ass to school Eddie".

The line then went dead and soon a dial tone replaced Mr. Munson's gruff voice. Leaning against the wall, half in a slumber-haze, Eddie stood there in his pajama pants, nowhere near ready to face the day.

Goddamnit.

He groaned loudly as he hung the phone up on the receiver and trudged back to his room to go to bed.

Today was one of those days Eddie didn't want
to go to school. To be honest that was every day, but sitting in a mundane classroom full of kids who don't understand you- or who don't want to understand you- was not something he felt like enduring today. After what happened last night all he wanted to do was sleep until it was midday, and then smoke until his brain went numb. Once he'd wake up, he'd blast music until he passed out into a drunken coma.

This was brand new territory for him. Feelings of stupidity and shame were not, but navigating female encounters and regrets was. Sure he has had a female encounter before, but none he actually cared about. Plus they were always intertwined with drugs and dealing. He couldn't stand that this was another notch to add on his list of things he hated about school, and his life. His stomach turned into knots just thinking about running into you in the hallway, or seeing your face in class. God forbid a teacher makes you two partners on a project or something. He felt like a complete moron.

Eddie groaned as he shoved his face into his pillow wishing this life wasn't his.

The cafeteria hummed with chatter as students milled around. Eddie would normally make fun of the mundane conversations happening over rotten food, but he was too consumed with his thoughts as he picked at his trail mix bag. He sat at the head of an empty table, debating on ditching the rest of the day, when his band of merry men arrived.
