As Ms. Kelly pulled the blinds down in her office, you sat impatiently waiting for her to sit down in her chair. It was your usual Tuesday session and she had already asked you to wait outside until she finished with another student who was running overtime.
"I hope you know the clock's running", you sneered sarcastically as she peered over her shoulder at you.
"You can start talking at any time", she smiled back, knowing damn well you were not about to start the conversation as you slumped down lower in your chair. As she readied herself, she took her seat behind her large oak desk. "Okay, how's it going?"
You chuckled as you peered up at her, raising an eyebrow. "That's your start?" She tilted her head at you signaling to focus on the point. "Fine Fine", you raised your arms in defeat. "It's been okay lately. I haven't hung out with Chrissy as much but I've been doing okay". Your words spilled out but your knee began to tap anxiously giving away that you were most likely hiding something.
You hadn't talked to your mom much since your father came to dinner, and the only conversation you had about the entire thing was with Chrissy that evening over the phone. Other than that you were bottling everything in again and acting like nothing was wrong.
"Anything else happen?" She focused in on your leg knowing you were probably leaving out important details by the way your body reacted.
"Well," you started as you steadied yourself, "everything's business as usual except my dad came for dinner". Your voice dripped with sarcasm as Ms. Kelly's face changed rapidly at your words. She now appeared more concerned than before.
"And how was that?", she asked cautiously. You anxiously fidgeted in your chair, wishing this session would be short, but if you started with this topic, you figured that ship had long sailed.
"It was fine, I guess," you murmured. "It was weird to have him home. My mom just seemed like everything was normal". Ms. Kelly nodded as if she understood.
"What was the occasion?". Her question left you to explain how your mother seemed to be trying to make things work with your dad again, for whatever reason. "And what do you think would happen if he came back into your life?" She leaned slightly forward as you moved your head from side to side thinking of the endless options that could play out.
"I dunno", you shrugged, not really wanting to go into details, but she eyed you skeptically, not allowing you to run from this. "He gets drunk, beats my mom, we live happily ever after, he leaves again", you sighed, "The possibilities are endless". The truth is, you played each scenario in your head at least a hundred times already, and each one ended in someone getting hurt.
Ms. Kelly jotted down something on her notepad before proceeding. "What do you think your mom is wanting from him?" She mused, hoping to spark some insightful thought process in your mind which you were fighting hard against. You scoffed at her words and looked out the window shaking your head. What is this 20 Questions?
