It was about 5:00 PM by the time you got out of the shower. Your mom was busy in the kitchen when you got home and you figured her new display of housewife meant she had good news about a potential job offer. As you made your way down the stairs the enticing smell of dinner cooking awakened your senses and the house was saturated by a familiar scent you couldn't quite place. You made your way into the kitchen as she pulled the roast pan out of the oven and began transferring the food into serving bowls.

"You look oddly nice", you stated as you picked at the assorted cheese on the cutting board. She was dawning a new floral dress and her hair was done up in pins. You had not seen her wearing anything remotely formal in months, so her new attire led you to be somewhat confused.

"Oh this?" She looked down as she smoothed out the undetectable wrinkles anxiously. "I bought it last week", she smiled as her eyes darted back to the undone serving plates. You raised your eyebrows as you sat down at the counter top and watched her feverishly zoom around the kitchen.

"What's all this for?" You skeptically questioned as your head followed her to the dining room. She had plates and silverware set up, with nice dinner napkins, but she did not answer you. She was too busy correcting the positioning of the silverware to pay you any mind. Her behavior was odd to you, as you would normally both eat take out and sit in front of the TV so the idea of having a formal dinner was out of character.

"Mom, what is all this?" You slightly tittered as she grabbed the salad bowl and returned back to the dining room.

"Just-", she motioned with her hands for you to simmer down. "I am trying to be polite". You furrowed your brow and eyed her as she anxiously smoothed out her dress again and took a sip of her red wine. "We are having a guest", she smiled at you without explaining the entire situation.

"A guest?" You were perplexed. "Who the hell's coming over? You don't know any-"

You were mid sentence when the doorbell rang causing you to stop badgering. Her eyes widened as she set her wine glass down in a frenzy, now checking herself in the reflection of the picture on the wall before straightening out the lining of her dress for the hundredth time. You were baffled at her behaviors, as she was now visibly panicky.

"Mom?" You tried to grab her attention as she walked to the door. She was ignoring you at this point so you turned your head back to the cheese board figuring you'd find out who your mystery guest was any minute anyway. You heard your mom take a long drawn breath before she opened the door and said hello.

"It's good to see you", She breathed as she invited them in. You remained facing your crackers as you heard footsteps on the floor drawing closer. You had no intention of meeting a new boyfriend, or whoever was present in your kitchen. You couldn't care less to portray a healthy household, filled with home cooked dinners and pinned up hair. You and your mom carried way too much baggage to be seen as anything more than what you inherently were.
