It never ceased to amaze you how quickly word traveled. In the small town of Hawkins, population who the hell knows, one's own problems were always everyone's lunchtime gossip. Over metal trays and stale mashed potatoes your name fluttered across everyone's lips by mid day.
"Sage Aurora and Billy Hargrove are dating". "They had a candlelit dinner on Friday night". "They hooked up at lovers lake". "She's a slut". "He's"— well, he's just Billy.
You heard it all by the time you made your way around your friends. Half the battle was squashing the rumors and the other half was trying to act like you didn't slightly like the attention. Although you were a nervous wreck last Friday, you played off the night like it was amazing. Hell, half the things they were saying about you, you wished had actually happened.
"Please tell me he at least opened your door". Heather looked over at you while you tied your white tennis shoes. She stood on the track patiently waiting so you two could begin walking your required mile in Physical Education class.
"Opened and closed". You smiled back at her as you two began briskly walking. "He even paid for dinner". You boasted.
"Honey he better have paid!", she laughed. "I'm just glad you finally got out of the house though". Her voice trailed off. You continued to walk in step but you could feel her gaze slowly peer over at you. She worried maybe her comment had gone too far. Letting her words sink in, you nodded your head slowly. It had taken you almost half a year to build up the courage to go out with someone. Half a year to feel worthy of attention and compliments. Half a year to be taken care of, and taken out on a date. You nodded your head realizing how far you had come.
"Honestly me too", You agreed. "It was nice". You smiled lightly to yourself as memories of your night came rushing back to you. Billy's enchanting and intoxicating stare. His burgundy shirt that nonchalantly showed off his chest. His hand casually and unsuspectingly making its way to the back of your headrest. You couldn't help but smile. He was wonderful.
"Ooh you're blushing". Heather teased as she playfully nudged you. Your embarrassment was hard to control so you rolled your eyes and stared down at your shoes. "Tell me everything. What did you eat?" She asked excitedly, not realizing your cheeks were flush.
"Uh", you hesitated to finish your response. "A burger?" you questioned nervously knowing she was about to lose it.
"A burger? You had a hamburger? Jesus Sage", she laughed at you. "You go on a hot date with a hot guy and you get a burger?" She was horrified.
"I was hungry!" Your voice shrieked. "And I don't know if going to a Diner is really considered a hot date", you quoted her. Hot date or not, your company definitely fit the criteria.
"You gotta take some notes from the Heather Rule Book hun. Girls do not eat burgers on dates. That's like, marriage status after 30 years, if that". She tried to teach you her ways but they fell on deaf ears.
