Feeling like you had the weight of the world on your shoulders, or in this case on your eyelids, you mindlessly walked up the stairs to your room wanting nothing more than to lay in bed and melt into your sheets. But as you turned the corner of the banister your mom walked out of her room almost running right into you.
"Oh! My god" she jumped clutching her chest.
"Sorry mom", you murmured and kept walking trying to avoid eye contact for fear she'd know you were high.
"Why are you home so early hun?" she asked you as her voice followed.
"Great", you thought to yourself as you set your bag down.
"I—uh, I'm not. My free period starts at 2:40 so I just decided to go home". You walked to your desk and shuffled with various items trying to avoid her gaze as she leaned onto your door frame
"Sage, I need to speak to you about something". Her tone sounded serious.
"Oh here it comes!" You thought to yourself ready for the big blow out. You continued to put away your books and find anything to preoccupy yourself with so she did not look at you.
"Can you please sit down for a minute?" She walked closer holding the frame to your bed as her eyes watched you, unaware of your current state.
"I don't think now's a good time". You replied, with your back turned to her.
"Sweetie just look at me". She sat down, her voice now becoming soft.
Don't you dare look at her.
"Sage", she urged again. You sighed and put down the sweater you were pretending to fold and stared at her solemn face. Just then her eyebrows twitched and her posture became a little more rigid. "Have you been crying?"
You didn't know what to say. Should you lie? This could be your escape. She obviously thought your bloodshot eyes were due to crying, which was partially true, so you ran with it.
You shook your head 'yes' and she stood up walking over to you for an embrace. "I just had a really hard day", you muffled into her shoulder as you hugged her back.
Oh yeah. You're def going to hell.
She sighed, pulling away to look at your eyes. "Oh sweetie, It's okay", she soothed as she rubbed your arms. "It was therapy today wasn't it?"
You shook your head again and broke away from her touch heading to your bed.
"I just really want to lay down if that's okay", you sighed, praying she would take the bait.
"Of course". She looked at you one last time before walking out of the room and closing the door behind her.
"That was close", you mumbled as you flopped down on your bed face first into the pillow.
