Cai Fei sat in her study, reclining in her chair, staring at the Black Sky Butterfly perched on her finger.
The problem of what would happen to Shao Yue if Cai Fei perished weighed heavily on Cai Fei's mind. It was difficult to bring up with Shao Yue, so Cai Fei had been considering it on her own.
Thus far, she only had one good idea.
"This is essentially a clone born from the soul of that Black Sky Butterfly," Cai Fei thought to herself. "If I could make a similar soul clone, would that work as a contingency?"
If Cai Fei could make a second copy of herself, that she then entrusted to Shao Yue, then that copy could live on even if Cai Fei herself died. If Shao Yue's cultivation advanced far enough, she could then make a new body for the clone, and the clone would become the primary.
After restoring her cultivation, the clone could then make another clone, continuing the cycle.
Several aspects of the idea made Cai Fei feel uneasy in a philosophical sense, but she also felt it could work. She didn't plan on dying anytime soon, but people rarely planned to die.
"The only problem is, only the Black Sky Butterfly knows that technique, and I don't even know if it would have the effect I want."
After considering it more, she decided she really had no choice but to pay the Black Sky Butterfly a visit. She informed Shao Yue of her plans.
"She made a decent first impression, but I really don't know her, and she is very powerful," Shao Yue said. "I'll go with you."
Cai Fei shook her head. "I want to do it alone."
"Oh?" Shao Yue raised an eyebrow, examining Cai Fei for a while. "Well, leave your remaining Pure Yin Spring with me. At least that will remove an incentive for her to attack you."
Cai Fei agreed, taking it out and entrusting it to Shao Yue.
"Also, give me a few days. I'll prepare a few bottles of pills that might interest her. Maybe they'll make her more amiable to speaking with you."
"Sounds good."
A week later, after receiving directions from Zhu Jiao, Cai Fei headed out towards the peak where the Black Sky Butterfly lived. Before she could come within a kilometer of the mountain, a powerful divine sense locked onto her.
"What do you want?"
Cai Fei came to a stop in mid-air and bowed deeply. "Junior Cai Fei greets Senior. Junior would like to ask for Senior's guidance regarding a particular technique. My master has also prepared several pills that may be useful to Senior."
"What are the pills?"
"A bottle of Soul Reformation Pills, a bottle of Wintermoon Pills, and two bottles each of grade six healing and qi restoration pills."
"What's the technique?"
A hint of elation crept into Cai Fei's expression. "It's the technique that Senior used to split her soul. Junior was wondering if that technique could be used to essentially create a clone, and if so, if Senior would be willing to teach it to this junior."
There was no response for a few minutes, then the Black Sky Butterfly asked, "Your master is proficient in the Spiritual Dao, correct?"
"Correct."
The Black Sky Butterfly emerged from her courtyard. She crossed the distance to Cai Fei in two leisurely steps, then held out her hand. "Give me the pills you mentioned, and a blank jade slip."
