AN: This chapter will tell the story of how Patrick left Grey's. Remember this is my take on it that fits this story. I know there are a lot of rumors but none are confirmed to be real. So keep in mind again that this is all fiction. But to quote Ellen Pompeo from her pod episode with Debbie.
"In the end love always wins"
Yes she said this in response to Debbie mentioning the drama that surrounded Pattys departure and the fact that Ellen got him to come back. So remember that quote when reading this because it's going to be angsty!

*January 2015*
"What I want doesn't fucking matter right now. Can't you see that Patty?"
The words were stuck in Patricks head as he layed down in his trailer that night. These last few months had been crazy to say the least and now he was really going to leave his place of work. Not only that he was going to leave his friends and his colleagues but worst of all he was leaving his best friend and soulmate. He didn't want this, neither did Ellen, but maybe she was right. Maybe what they wanted didn't matter right now. Especially not when she pushed him to go. The fight they had earlier had been worse than ever and he really didn't know what to do anymore.

*earlier that day*
"I don't want to leave the show El. So if Jill can't handle me working here then fuck it. Let her have her shitty divorce!" Patrick said as he looked over at Ellen sitting in her trailer bed. He had already stepped back, asked for less screen time to make Jill happy. Yet nothing he did seemed to be enough. The word divorce had been thrown in his face this morning if he didn't quit his job to focus more on his family. But he knew he could never make this decision without Ellie.
"You can't say that Patrick! You need to work things out with Jill." Was the response she gave him and he could see that Ellen was trying to push away her own feelings. He didn't want her to do that though.
'Why couldn't they just get to be together?' Patty thought as he watched the woman he loved. It was so complicated but at the same time it felt so easy. He wanted her and she wanted him. Fuck Jill and fuck Chris!
"But I don't want that Ellie. I want to stay... And damn it I fucking want you." As the words left him he walked over to sit down next to her and he put his had on her cheek. But unlike most times she didn't let him keep it there and quickly pushed it away.
"God don't make this harder than it has to be Patrick. I have a toddler at home and you need to do this for your family." Ellen quickly got up from the bed as she spoke. She simply couldn't handle being to close to him right now.
"Don't you wan't this? Don't you love me as much as I freaking love you! We can do this if we just try." He said walking after her and grabbing her arm. Ellen pushed him away and Patrick had never seen her be so distant ever. "What I want doesn't fucking matter right now. Can't you see that Patty?" She yelled and the words hit him like a brick.
"This is what's gonna happen. You are going to go to Shonda and tell her you need to leave for your family's sake. Then you're gonna go home and tell Jill that you'll fight for your family." As she spoke her eyes were almost cold. It was as if all of her emotions had left her body.
"What about us?" Patrick said quietly this time. He was so darn broken in this moment. Ellens eyes soften a bit but not much. "We'll still be friends Patty. Just not at work." She told him but he didn't know if he believed her. How could they be distant friends after everything that happened over these last few years? And how was he going to cope with not seeing her all the time. These last weeks working less had been hard enough for him. But he could see that she was not going to change her mind about this. He knew that she did this believing it was the right this to do. So after a few moments of silence he said "Okay. I'll talk to shonda."

Their conversation quickly ended after that and he had now officially handed in his resignation. The worst part was that after the talk with Shonda they decided that he would be killed off later this season. Which just gave him a few more months with Ellen. A lot less than anyone thought.
