The after-work of the battle was long. Orc bodies needed to be piled and burned. The dead soldiers were cleaned, wrapped in sheets, and placed in carts so their families could mourn and bury them. Finally, after a long three days, we made our way back to Edoras.
On our journey back we found ourselves looking at the horizon.
"Saurons wrath will be terrible, his retribution swift." Mithrandir stated. Legolas stared into the skyline with a look of determination.
"The Battle of Helms Deep is over. The battle for Middle Earth is about to begin." The wizard said as we rode off.
Oh, thrills.
Our group wandered through the wilderness for a day before we came back to Fangorn. We ride through the thinning trees to see a stone wall. On it was two people I thought I would never see again.
Merry stood up. "Welcome My lords, and My lady, to Isengard." He held a pipe in one hand. Aragorn sat grinning, Legolas looked amused, and I was dripping tears of happiness.
"You young rascals! A merry chase you've led us on to find you feasting..and smoking." Gimli said. I laughed to myself.
Pippin spoke up. "We are sitting on a field of victory enjoying a few well-earned comforts. The salted pork is particularly good."
Have to say, that did sound appealing.
"Salted Pork?" The dwarf asked amusedly.
"Hobbits." Gandalf said impatiently.
"We are under orders from Treebeard, who's taken over management of Isengard." Merry smiled.
We rode through the broken stone wall. The water was almost knee-high on Wolf. It was blurry with mud and debris. I tried not to panic at the dark and eerie liquid all around me. Legolas turned Arod around and rode up to me. He took my reigns and tied them to his saddle. "Tolo." I smiled and nodded. We rode together behind the others. Eomer looked around in disgust. Our group stood at the bottom of a tall, black tower.
A huge, walking tree approached. Its huge legs swashed the water around.
"Young Master Gandalf, I'm glad you have come. Wood and water, stock and stone I can handle but there's a wizard to manage here, locked in his tower." Treebeard said in his booming voice. Legolas looked around. My insides shook at the prospect of being so close to the one whose servants kidnapped me. Legolas rode closer and extended his hand to me. I grabbed onto it and kept my eyes on my husband, not the water or tower. Just him.
"Show yourself!" Aragorn ordered.
Be careful, even in defeat Saruman is dangerous." Gandalf cautioned.
"Let's just have his head and be done with it." Gimli scoffed.
"No, we need him alive to talk."
I looked up to see a white figure come to the edge causing Wolf to shift nervously under me.
"You have fought many wars and slain many men Theoden King, and made peace afterwards," Saruman called down. "Can we not take council together, as we once did, old friend? Can we not have peace, you and I?"
"We shall have peace." Theoden replied. "We shall have peace when you answer for the burning of the westfold and the children that lay there. We shall have peace when the lives of soldiers, whose bodies are hewn even as they lay dead against the gate of the Hornburg, are avenged! When you hang from a gibbet for the sport of your own crows, we shall have peace."
"Gibbets and crows, dotard!" Saruman yelled. His eyes turned to me with a shocked look.
"What do you want Gandalf Greyhame? Let me guess: the key of Orthanc? Or perhaps Barad-dur itself along with the crowns of seven kings and the staffs of five wizards?"
Gandalf called back. "Your treachery has cost many lives. Thousands more are now at risk, but you could save them Saruman. You were deep in the enemies council." Saruman grinned. "So, you have come for information? Well, I have some for you." He whipped out a black, glowing orb thing from his cloak. "Something festers in the heart of Middle Earth. Something you have failed to see. But, the great eye has seen it. Even now he presses his advantage. He will attack soon."
Mithrandir rode forward.
"You're all going to die." He sneered. "But, you know this Gandalf." His eyes moved to me. "You have led innocents to death."
Legolas's hand went for his bow. I stopped him.
Saruman looked to Aragorn. "You cannot think this ranger will ever sit on the throne of Gondor? This exile crept from the shadows will never be crowned king." He continued. "Gandalf does not hesitate to sacrifice those closest to him, those he professes to love. Tell me...what words of comfort did you give the halfling before you sent him to his death? The path you have sent him on will only lead to his death."
Gimli gave a humph. "I have heard enough. Put an arrow in his gob Legolas." My husband went for his bow.
"No." Gandalf said. Legolas held his bow tightly. He was going into defence mode.
"Come down Saruman, and your life will be spared."
"Save your pity and your mercy! I have no use for it." Saruman stated. He shot a fireball at Gandalf and flame engulfed him and Shadowfax. I gasped, certain they would disintegrate.
Gandalf's only response was. "Saruman, your staff is broken." As if on cue, the black pole in Sarumans hand shattered. A darkly dressed man appeared. Grima. I automatically averted my gaze to Wolf's mane.
Theoden looked up at him. "Grima, you need not follow him. You were not always as you are. You were once a man of Rohan, come down."
Saruman replied. "A man of Rohan? What is the house of Rohan but a thatched barn where brigands drink in the reek and rats roll on the floor with the dogs? Victory at Helm Deep does not belong to you, Theoden Horsematser. You are a lesser son of the greater sires."
"Grima come down and be free of him."
"Free? He will never be free."
Grima looked desperate. "No."
Saruman slapped him to the ground. "Get down cur."
"Saruman, you were deep in the enemy's council. Tell us what you know." Mithrandir ordered.
"You withdraw your guard, and I will tell you where your doom will be decided."
Just after Saruman replied, Grima rose with a blade in his hands. My eyes widened.
"I will not be held prisoner here," Saruman said just as Grima stabbed the knife into his back. I squeezed my eyes closed. After hearing someone draw and bow and fire, I looked up to see Grima drop dead. Saurman stumbled forward and was impaled by a spike on the waterwheel.
I felt sick to my stomach.
"Send word to our allies, and to every corner of Middle Earth that still stands free. The enemy moves against us. We need to know where he will strike." Gandalf announced.
Treebeard returned to our side. "The filth of Saruman is washing away. Trees will come back to live here, young trees, wild trees."
I noticed Pippin staring into the water. He climbed off Aragorn's horse and waded through the water.
"Pippin!" Aragorn called.
The hobbit was mesmerized by something. I shivered when I saw him pull the orb from the water.
"Bless my bark!" Treebeard exclaimed. Gandalf rode up. "Peregrin Took, I'll take that my lad. Quickly now!" He took the globe from Pippin. Gandalf rode ahead as we filed out of the flooded place.
