I rolled over and saw the place beside me empty. Legolas was gone. After sitting up, I looked around the room. Our fellowship had bunked with the men in one of the halls. I'd felt safe with Legolas next to me but now I felt exposed. Aragorn slept on the bed next to ours. He'd been asleep when Legolas and I had snuck back in after our, expedition. I smiled to myself. It had been weeks since we had been alone long enough to, uh, well, you get the idea.

I pulled my cloak on and exited the room as quietly as I could manage. The door farthest to my left was open a crack. I pushed it open and saw it opened to the outside. A cloaked figure stood at the end of the stone foundation. A strand of blonde hair blew in the breeze.

"Lego?" I asked as I approached.

He turned to me and smiled. "Melleth."

I hugged him. "My husband."

"Are you alright?"

"Yes, of course, I just feel huggy."

"Well then, I shall not withhold my wife's needs." He wrapped his arm around my shoulders.

"What do you think Frodo and Sam are doing?"

"I am not sure. I hope they are well." Legolas replied.

"Do you think they have made it to Mordor?"

"If they have, we would surely know. Either by terrible wrath or the disappearance of it." He looked out across the shadowy fields. "I believe they are still out there."

"If Sauron had the ring we would know?" I asked nervously.

"Yes darling, if Sauron had the ring Middle Earth would be being demolished by now."

 "What do we do now?"

"I do not know, things are going to seem uncertain for the next while. Do not fear, if I felt this is going to end badly I would send you home and tell Ada to pack the kingdom and sail west."

"And leave you to die? No way." I slipped out of his arms and cupped his cheek in my hands.

"I would find you again, I always will." He sighed.

"Stop trying to get me to leave, I will not. When we married I promised I would stick by you no matter what. If that means walking into hell, so be it, I will. We fight together, and heaven forbid we fall together. Now, no more talk about us separating. I am stupidly stubborn, or have you forgotten?"

"I have not forgotten." He chuckled. "You're cute when you're mad."

"Do you want to get slapped?"

"By you? Sure." He smiled.

I shook my head. My husband leaned down and kissed me gently. I wrapped my arms around his neck and his hands found my waist.

We stood like that for some time before another figure stepped out. I pulled away and saw it was Aragorn.

Aragorn crossed his arms and stood next to us looking toward Mordor.

"The stars are veiled, something stirs in the east," Legolas said. "Sleepless malice, the eye of the enemy is moving."

"I know. It is turning towards us." Aragorn said. "I would prepare you two, things are about to break."

"Worse than it has been," I whispered. "Bring it."

Legolas's head whipped around. "He is here."

The three of us ran into the building and to our room where we were lodging. Pippin held the Palantir in his hands and was contorting. Without thinking I rushed forward and grabbed it. A hot, searing pain ripped through me and I saw something that made my heart ache. It was Legolas, lying in a pool of blood on a mud-filled battlefield. I heard someone yelp and it was taken from me. I fell backward and onto something soft.
