It was rather beautiful the way she put his anxious thoughts to sleep.
What an idiot Luke felt.
His tearful eyes stayed fixed on the door, hoping she would come back.
Why would she?
He had spoken to her so condescendingly, sentences filled with all these assumptions that her life was perfect, filled with sunshine and rainbows.
But it was far from that, quite the opposite actually. From her words, her family, if she could even call them that, had shunned her away. It surprised him, her smile had tricked him into believing she had a happy life. How wrong he was.
Seconds after Eleanor ran out, he followed not far behind trying to catch up on the upset girl.
"El... El stop please" he shouted after her, with each shout Luke's voice was filled with more regret.
Finally catching up to her, Luke gently reached for her wrist, pulling her close. The tug on her wrist startled her until she laid eyes on Luke. She felt a strange wave of relief. God was she mad at him right now but god did she need him. His arms engulfed her small frame, her hands grasping at his jumper.
"I'm so sorry El, I had no idea, I'm so sorry" he whimpered into her hair, completely closing any gaps between them.
She would have normally crumbled at hearing "El" but she couldn't, her mind was frazzled.
Both of Luke's arms were wrapped around her, one hand running fingers through her hair, the other rubbing circles into her back trying to soothe away the pain he had inflicted.
Eleanor hadn't cried for months and in that moment she tried to keep it all in but she couldn't. Tears flooded out of her eyes and into Luke's chest. He felt his heart physically break at the sound of her quiet sobs. Luke knew he had fucked up but the way she clung to him told him something different.
Her disappointment dissipated and was replaced with confusion. Pulling her head away, she looked at him, tears blurring her vision; the very sight of tears crushing his soul.
"I don't understand" Eleanor's voice cracked and unstable, eyebrows furrowed, eyes darting between his.
"What don't you understand?" Luke asked, already painfully aware of what she was speaking about but he wanted to push it away, in denial as usual. His arms fell limp at his sides. Eleanor's shoulders shuddered at the lack of Luke.
"What are we doing? One minute we are close, next you seem like you hate me? Do you?" She sniffed, wiping underneath her eyes.
"El, what, no, I don't hate you, how could I?" he stuttered, voice shaky knowing he's a question away from having to tell the truth, to himself and to her.
