After a night of overthinking, she peeled herself out of bed and got ready for a full day at the studio. Friday was always studio day and she had become accustomed to the familiarity of the routine. Whether the week had been busy and stressful or calm and full of happiness, it was always useful to get thoughts and ideas out of her head and into the form of lyrics.
Opening the curtains, she was pleasantly surprised by the low, amber hue from the sunrise. She had missed this wonder so very much.
A bright light reflected around her room and caused her to squint her eyes. Eleanor looked around the room to find the source. Stepping towards it, she picked it up and traced the earrings she had received from Nate. A heavy sigh escaped her lips. She felt guilty about the whole thing. If she had known what Nate was planning she probably wouldn't have said yes. Eleanor shoved them into her nightstand and headed into town.
But she just couldn't focus. Luke was stuck in her mind. She felt uneasy and this overwhelming sense that something was really wrong.
She frowned at the lack of a response from Luke. She had already texted him three times today. Each reply was simple, morning , I'm good u?, Nm just writing a song. Each one lacked a heart at the end. Each one made her feel sick.
"Earth to Eleanor" Nate laughed, pinching her cheeks. She blinked rapidly as she came back around as the dull ache of his fingers lingered.
"Talk to me doll" he demanded, sitting in the other egg chair.
"It's nothing" she sighed, strumming her guitar loosely, her fingers messing up the chords again.
"Well it's not nothing if it's interfering with your playing. As your boss, I demand to know if my best and brightest colleague is okay?" He twisted, gaining a small smile and roll of the eyes from Eleanor. She rested the guitar down across her lap as she admitted defeat.
"I'm sure it's nothing, Luke's just been a bit off lately and I don't know why" she ran her fingers through her hair.
Nate wanted to say many things. But slagging off her current boyfriend wasn't going to get her to be his new girlfriend. He had to play tactfully.
"You know I don't have a lot of…love for the Blonde, not my sort of fella and all, but what I do know is that you deserve… you deserve the finest of things, someone at your every word, someone doing all they can to see you smile."
"He usually does, I'm sure he's just going through a rough patch, like we all do" she smiled reassuringly. She would always fight in Luke's corner.
"See that's just it, you know what you are?" He frown, resting his finger and thumb in his chin in deep thought.
"What?"
"The girl who over waters plants, you give and you give" Nate continued to explain, "and it's great but sometimes the best thing we can do for the people we love, is leave them to soak it up and grow on their own." He had moved forward and perched at the end of the chair. With the reduction of space between them, Nate reached forward and tucked a stray curl behind her ear.
