Two days following the birth of Zyrah's niece, she, Konall, Rurik, and their dragons caught up with Hiccup and his friends. The riders all drifted into small groups, already becoming fast friends.
Something similar for the dragons, too. And while Killgrave and Lightbolt were happy to chat with the Berkian dragons, Toothless's attention gravitated more to Blueheart. And while Blueheart understood why, she couldn't deny her mild irritation.
To entertain him, she decided to show him around the wilder parts of Firewind, especially in the woods, even showing him the general area where she met Zyrah.
Toothless was still taken aback with the knowledge that Blueheart had attacked her rider when they first met.
I was young and dumb. Though... didn't your rider say you roared in his face after he cut you free? Toothless huffed.
I was trying to say thank you.
Some thank you.
As they walked, Toothless sniffed the air, taking the smell of the woods, all the various creatures, and Blueheart's scent. Distinctly of sweet pine, leather, fern, and a mix of Zyrah's scent thrown in. But at the same time, he could pick up on the scents of other dragons. Not the dragons of Zyrah's brother and best friend, but wild dragons.
So, Blueheart... I'm curious, where were you born? Where did you live before you met Zyrah?" Blueheart shrugged.
Some island a few days away from Zyrah's island. There is- or was, I haven't been there in a long time- a Night Fury colony. Because I was the rebel of my family, I left pretty soon once I was old enough to. After that, I met Zyrah.
Toothless was appropriately surprised by hearing this. A Night Fury colony? He had been raised with an isolated family, just his parents and his three siblings, three sisters, he was one of the middles. He wondered if it was still there or if, Odin help him, they'd been killed.
He hadn't realized he'd been staring at Blueheart for too long.
What? He shook his head.
Sorry... I haven't seen another female Night Fury since I last saw my parents and my three sisters. Blueheart nodded.
Does your family still live on that island? He asked.
As far as I know, yes. Night Furies used to be migratory, but after we started becoming the hunted, we ceased migrations. Blueheart got lost in her thoughts, she did well in hiding it, but she couldn't stop glancing over at Toothless, especially his artificial tail. She wasn't sure if she liked it or not, but it was very fascinating to look at. The bright red stood out from his black scales, the contrast was nice.
I know you're staring at my tail. He said. Blueheart looked away.
Sorry.
Don't apologize, I've gotten it all.
There was another pause as the male and female thought of more questions to ask each other. Toothless was eager to learn about his own species, since so many memories were lost to him from years of being under the control of the Green Death, and having been apart from his family had affected him in ways he didn't realize. Blueheart's curiosity was mild at first, but she couldn't deny her interest as well; she did feel sorry for him, having lost his identity over the years.
What do you remember of your family? Like your sisters? While wanting to learn more, she didn't want to upset him, unsure if the little memory he had was good.
I think... well I do know I'm the second oldest. Older sister, and two little ones. From what I can remember, I last saw them when I was 5?
When you were five? You were still a baby! How did you end up with the Green Death? He shook his head.
It's really fuzzy... I just remember being snatched by another dragon when my mother wasn't looking... paying attention to my baby sisters. I blacked out, and the next thing I can recall, I was on a ledge in a volcano, with the Green Death whispering in my head.
Blueheart was horrified, him having been just a baby when he was kidnapped and already under the control of a monster.
... Maybe I can take you to the colony. She hesitantly offered. His green eyes widened, as did his pupils.
What? You... you're serious?
Perhaps. I don't know how to explain it, but I feel that I can understand the pain of losing your history. With our species, considering what loss we've suffered. Maybe I can help you reconnect.
That's a huge offer, you know that? For someone you don't know that well?
Call it instinct, Toothless. I'm the first Night Fury you've seen in over 15 years. Take a chance to learn more about yourself.
Toothless was a bit taken aback by her unabashed honesty, but deep down, he appreciated it. Ever since he and Hiccup had killed the Green Death, freeing him and countless other dragons from mind control to then defeating Drago's Alpha, Toothless had so many questions about his identity, understanding that his memories were scattered and fuzzy.
But yet he'd had no access to regaining what he lost. And now, he finally found someone who could help. A beautiful female, who, while a bit withdrawn and equally moody like him, shown him kindness, and was willing to help.
